Kate's daughter Mady is thirsty. In typical kid fashion she says she's going to "Get dehydrated" and is very dramatic. They're clearly JUST about to go on camera for an interview.
So what does Kate do? She calls for a bottle of water, takes a sip herself, then puts it off to the side while Mady asks for it. She could have easily given her a sip instead of taking it for herself.
Bad mom? I don't know if this is evidence of that. Selfish jerk? Yeah, that seems pretty clear.
If she had sipped it and then handed it to the kid, I could have understood that, little kids leave all sorts of backwash and grossness in your bottle, so I always opt for the first sip, but to take a sip and put it down and deny the kid any cuz they don't have time is bullshit.
I just watched it again, at the 30 second mark, she had the water, by :35 she had it open and drank out of it, the clip goes to 1:05. In the time it took her to explain to them that "Judy" would bring them sippy cups after the interview, at least half of them could have also enjoyed a sip.
Yeah, definitely being a jerk. I watched it a few times too and she seemed jerkier each time.
Mady is one of the older ones, past sippy cup stage, a quick swig out of that bottle would have taken way less time than the whole arguing that they didn't have time thing did.
I think Mady made a really valid point when she said "You're really mean, you waved the bottle right in my face." It was pretty mean.
* It could be indicative that she's just trying her best to keep them all in line for an interview, and being a mom is SO HARD.
* It could be indicative that she likes her roasted child best when it's less juicy, so she's prepping Mady for the grill.
I don't understand the statement. It's meant to negate something I'm pretty sure, but it's not working because it's not clear. You seem to be trying to communicate something with that - so enlighten me.
They are on camera nearly all of the time. Why don't we ever see Kate being sweet with the kids? Why no warm moments between them?
I don't watch except for the clips y'all post, but no one ever defends her with a "but just last week she was taking excellent care of them." I think she believes her own martyr talk and thinks that all of the "sacrifices" she allegedly has made for them is enough and the little brats should just behave.
Apparently this is the second time in a week she's been called "mean" by one of her kids and the press (US WEEKLY in particular) is having a freaking field day.
This video was pretty disturbing, to me. I don't jump up and run for the fridge as soon as my girls ask for a drink; there are times they may have to ask twice. Carson can get her own stuff, but Lauren and Megan still need some assistance. The girl in this video is pretty whiny and I would have addressed that right away....but I still would have given her a sip of water.
The other time she was called mean was when they were on vacation in NC. They were all out by the pool and Kate told her kids if they splashed her, they were "dead meat". One of them then called her mean. Intentional or not, my kids take things pretty literally so I would never say that. But then it seems kinda stupid to sit right by a pool surrounded by eight kids if you have no desire to get wet.
Pfft. I get called mean by my kids all the time. If I wasn't, it would probably mean I've been a pushover. One minute I'm the meanest mom EVER, and two hours later I'm the greatest mom in the world. I'm pretty sure I fall somewhere in the middle.
Same here. I don't know that they've ever called me "mean", but they've certainly expressed their displeasure about many of my decisions!
If I were being filmed all the time, I might make an effort to be a wee bit more careful what I say and how I treat my children. She seems to be doing to the exact opposite.
I've watched about 60 seconds of this show, so clearly that's enough for me to form an opinion. I like Kate. I like that everyone thinks that everything she does is bitchy and mean. I like that she runs an organized house and doesn't worship her kids. But if she is a bitch, so what? She's got 8 kids and a bunch of nasty American television viewers to entertain. She's clearly doing her job as a mother and an entertainer. If she was a nice, congenial person, would any of you be watching her?
So good for Kate. Fuck John for cheating on her and fuck the American television viewing audience for judging her because she's taking advantage of the situation.
I don't doubt the love she has for her children either. She obviously loves them and wants the best for them.
As a person though, I am not a huge fan of Kate.

Speaking as a teacher . . . I think she'd be a very tough parent/teacher interview.
Of course she did not come off very well in that brief clip. I'm hard pressed though to describe the woman as a bitch based on that alone. Everyone has had moments in which they hardly portray model behaviour. If all you ever saw of me was a video clip of me barfing and being hauled off by the campus police in 1st yr. university would it be fair to form the opinion that I am an alcoholic lout based on that alone?
