"In a nutshell, our position is this: He isn't the Buddha, he's a human being, and human beings have a long way to go before they think before they act. "
That seems pretty neutral to me. Where's the crying? The soiling?
I think the fact that they went out of their way to comment on it at all is what bothered me. If they actually thought it wasn't a big deal - they wouldn't have even brought it up. I am aware that they said, "someone emailed them and asked for a comment," but it really wasn't necessary to comment on at all.
And even with their atypically mild response - I think it was a dig at Obama, and everyone who has ever smacked a fly, that they should "think before they act."
Lastly, I don't believe the sincerity of anything put out over a wire - making sure that the AP, The Christian Science Monitor, CNN, Fox, ABC, and The Guardian all report on it.
As if PETA gives a crap that they bother people. That's their shtick.
But they are being consistent with their message. They can't say not to club baby seals and don't eat burgers and then say it's OK to kill annoying, but generally harmless insects.
I actually think PETA is correct. We probably shouldn't kill animals for our consumption; if for no other reason than it's expensive to the environment. Do I practice what they preach? Not really. But I still think they're right. Sue me.
