Cut off a hand for $7,000,000?

Recently, the FDA has been issuing warnings about an IV anti-nausea medication (phenergan) that can cause people to lose a hand if it's injected wrong.

There was a case recently where a 19 year old girl was awarded $7,000,000 for losing her hand due to this.

Of course - this turned into a debate about whether or not we would willingly give up a hand for $7,000,000.

The first thing that I thought of was not being able to type. Room mate said "they HAVE to have 1 handed keyboards."

And indeed they do! Called a frog pad http://www.frogpad.com/)

I kind of want one of those. I think being able to type one handed would kick ass.

I'm still on the fence... I like my hands... though my room mate was so far off the fence - saying he would do it - that he was practically in the neighbors living room.

Would you give up a hand for $7,000,000?

No sir I would not.

And I'm not surprised you want to be able to type with only one hand :p

Well, there would be a back and forth motion similar to sewing, i guess.

Interesting. I never had an issue with it. For a while after high school, I had a hard time dealing with stress and I couldn't keep food down. They gave me a shot of that stuff (in the fleshy part of my rump), and then a pill form of it to take at home. It just make me uber-sleepy. I had an hour to eat before I'd fall asleep wherever I was. Never had any other problems with it.

I wonder if I could blame my tendinitis on it...

So are they saying...

June 29 2009, 12:47 AM

...they inject it in one's rump and then they have to take off a hand? I assumed they injected in the hand and the hand reacted badly.

FYI, these kinds of cases almost always settle to avoid appeal (for a much lesser amount) or are reduced by the judge. She will probably end up with a few hundred thousand to keep after medical, lawyers, etc. Worth losing your hand? I'd say not.

Ruby - the cases have occurred when it's injected improperly. If the needle goes too far and gets into an artery - the acidic medicine will build up in the hand and destroy nerves.

I took the pill form of it in high school for migraines. I still have all three of my hands.

Why the hand?

Wny not the nose? Or a toe? Or both hands and feet?

One hand seems kind of random.

Nope.

All you said was that the acidity built up in the hand, not why.

eta: do they inject in the hand? Ruby got it in the arse.

There's this drug that can be given to me to help prevent bone metastasis, BUT, there's a very small chance that it will MAKE YOU JAW ROT AWAY/DISSOVE!!!!!!!!

sad.gif WTF!?

Anyway, for 14 mil, I might consider giving a couple fingers off m left hand. Done and done. Where do I sign up!?

I retract my whiny voice, Marneyman.

If it's given in IV form (as opposed to just injecting a shot of it) it goes into the arm and can build up in the hand.

If I get to choose the hand, I'd definitely cut one off for $7,000,000.

/your hand.

Profit! happy.gif

Seriously though, I'd probably cut off a finger for a million. Toe you say? Gimmie that knife!

I would gladly chop off my right big toe for free, the stupid thing has been hurting for 2 weeks.
The last time it got damaged was when a cab ran over it way back in 2004.
So, the cab ran over my foot and then I tripped and fell down some cement stairs that led up to our house in Honolulu. I spent 3 days in bed because I couldn't walk.
Good times.
