I think those things in the middle are to stop big dogs from sticking their giant heads in the bowl and eating all the food. Leave some for the little dogs and stuff.
I've looked at these for my cats... one of them used to eat his food then chum it up regularly. The vet recommended feeding him on a tray like a cookie sheet so he had to chase the food around the pan and it would slow him down.
My dogs don't eat like that at all. I have a friend who has labs, who is baffled at the way my dogs can leave food in their bowls. I once fed her dogs, when she was out of town and it was like feeding piranha! So when I saw that bowl, I immediately thought "Yea, that's for Labradors."
My dog eats about 10 cups of food a day. But he's a grazer. He eats about half the bowl, then comes back 2 or 3 times to have some more. When the bowl is empty I refill it. No drama, no problemo.
Oh, and he's still pretty skinny. No fat on him at all.
