I'm going to admit my geek-fest - Battlestar Galactica

Who watched this show?
The Mermaid left for just under a week a few weeks ago to visit family. While she was gone, I was bored and On Demand had the first three seasons of Battlestar Galactica as an option. So I watched one. Then I proceeded to hermit-up and watch another 26 or so.
The Mermaid came back, I got her hooked. We have basically waited for the mail to come from Netflix every day with the new disc until as of last night we'd watched the entire series.
I'd say it was pretty remarkable, with a few slow spots. Now that it's over (save a TV movie coming this fall called the "Plan"), I'm kinda bummed. Overall I think it was a great study in what might happen if an entire race of people were reduced to just 40,000 or so on the run from their killers. The end was actually a nice tie-up, and I wasn't left with that feeling of "Well that sucks" that so often comes at the end of such things.
Anyone else watch it, or do I have to own being a true nerd here?

I went to high school and was on a water polo team with one of the writers of that show, Dave Weddle- He was a big Sam Peckinpaw fan, so there are some elements of the show there. Also, there are some scary similarities to Col Tigh and our high school water polo coach, who was a raging alcoholic.
Besides that I enjoyed the show quite a bit. Got a bit soft after the third season- but overall, very good.

I don't watch it, but I'm sure I'd like it once I got into it. I was a huge fan of the original show growing up. I had a big crush on Richard Hatch. I also remember my brother having a toy Cylon.

Richard Hatch is in this series too!
I had both a viper and a cylon raider from the original series. They tried to recall them from me because they fired these really small red 'torpedoes' that were meant to mimic the energy weapons of the originals. Some kid choked on one I guess.
There was no way I was turning those in! That they were dangerous made them that much cooler!
The scale was wrong to interact with my Star Wars figures and micronauts though. So they were like a midget race that bugged Baron Karza.

The cylon toy my brother had didn't shoot anything that I can recall. But it had a really neat red light thing in the helmet. I think my brother tried to make him fly, and he broke.
My husband still has all his original Star Wars toys from the 70's - in the boxes and in great condition! My brother had some really good Star Wars toys, but he didn't take care of them or save them.

My brother is a "collector" of Star Wars and Indiana Jones toys as well- My youngest son tries to collect toys, however he keeps them in the packaging for a week, then tears into them.
Some of you may be elated to hear that there is a Battlestar Galactica film in the works.
Not so fast: According to Universal Pictures, the film will be "a complete re-imagination" of the franchise and X-Men director Bryan Singer will direct.

I cannot wrap my brain around why the SciFi channel decided to change their name & logo to "SyFy"

I think all these sequels, right on the heels of a masterpiece is a huge mistake. A sequel is fine, but give some breathing room. Star Trek sequels worked best when they gave the franchise a break for a few years.
Star Trek TNG came 18 years after the end of the the original and it was fantastic. (BTW: Ron Moore, Executive producer and main writer for BSG, also did a bunch of writing for Star Trek TNG, including the movie First Contact) But the rest of the Star Trek shows ran right into each other, to the point where non Trekies couldn't tell them apart. Then they put the franchise on the shelf for a few years before launching the prequel movie, that most consider to be pretty great.

After a long series like this one- It would be nice if they could finish off with an extension of the story- so you could see where the characters ended up- kind of like the did with Firefly. Even though the end of the series was pretty good, there were still some huge ass questions left out there.
I am sure it (the movie version) is based solely economics- Some exec who never saw the series (new or old) is like- "hey- that TV show made some money- lets get it in the theaters and make it a FRANCHISE!!"
