I got a message this morning that a former coworker of mine died last Friday.


I guess I have mixed emotions. On one hand, it's a tragedy that a guy who was only 35 or so dies of cancer.

On the other hand this guy flat out hated me and I was definitely not his number one fan.

So, I find myself virtually indifferent to his death. Is that wrong of me?

I dont think its wrong of you. Who said you have to like everyone? Try to find at least one good thing about him (he was a good worker, always on time, or something positive) and just focus on that.

When I'm feeling a bit heartless about somebody's misfortune, I remind myself that they were likely somebody's child, a brother or sister and I feel bad for those people. Even if they were a worthless toolbag, it's sad that they were handed a life that made them so.

I do feel for his wife. I met her once and she seemed like a nice person. I didn't know the guy that she loved, but I'm sympathetic to her loss.

But deep down you question her judgment, don't you?

Still, this is why they coined the phrase, "Poor bastard..."

People lose their lives every day. I can understand the feelings of those who have to cope with a loss, even when I'm not affected. In this case it doesn't sound like a personal loss for you. I hope that makes sense.

This is an easy one. None of you knew my mom or grandma, but you gave me comfort in my time of loss. Funerals, memorials, what have you are both to celebrate the life of the departed and to give comfort to those affected by their loss. You don't have to do both.

One of my many brothers in law died from a brain tumor. I despised him when he was a member of our family but felt neither joy nor sadness when he died. I guess I just didn't care.
