So Dave Grohl gave permission for 3 Nirvana songs to be used in the newest edition of Guitar Hero. And Courtney Love gave permission to use Kurt Cobain's likeness as a character.

I just picked it up yesterday - was just doing some of the tunes on quickplay so didn't open up Kurt yet. I'm sorta leaning that it is such a travesty it is sort of beyond a travesty - a meta-travesty - it sort turns the corner back into cool.

I'm a total geek as I can do most of the stuff on Expert. It's got a few songs on it i've been waiting to get the music game treatment - Spirit of Radio and Sultans of Swing come to mind.

I don't mind the songs. The likeness falls into the same category as those dead guys they used to use in commercials. Like Gene Kelly or whatever...

I'm not that worked up about this, but I suspect Kurt would have been.

I mean, isn't this kinda the guy's commercial nightmare? What he, Dave and Krist werr railing against when they chose a picture of a baby chasing a dollar bill on the end of a hook underwater for the cover of Nevermind?

I guess if this means Kurt's baby gets a new pair of shoes, it was a good decision by Courtney. It's not like she's been working that much.

Yeah, the songs are okay. I just wonder if he himself would have agreed to be in the video game. Hell, he might have - he might have seen it as some kind of huge meta joke.

Oh also, peeps - if you buy the game before Oct 1st, they will mail you GH Van Halen about a month from now for free if you fill out some on-line paperwork and mail in your reciept.


I think that shows how much faith they have in the the Van Halen game - and as a whole, the music game craze is coming to an end...

Like Todd said, I don't really care about a bunch of pixels dancing around on screen in the likeness of Kurt Cobain.

Courtney Love is threatening to sue Activision over Kurt Cobain being an unlockable character in Guitar Hero 5 and took to her Twitter page to scream bloody murder. Of course this was probably to save her own ass because, surprise! Guess who signed the agreement and the back of the check. TMZ reports:

Cobain's widow just unleashed a serious Twitter attack on Activision -- the game developer -- saying they never got her permission to use Kurt's image ... and she wouldn't have given it to them if they had asked. Here's a sample:

"not in twenty JILLION years would i EVER have allowed this and this islethal."

"we get NO money for this, travesty, Frances gets NO money for the rape."

Activision released the following statement:
"Guitar Hero secured the necessary licensing rights from the Cobain estate in a written agreement signed by Courtney Love to use Kurt Cobain's likeness as a fully playable character in Guitar HeroŽ 5."

In a less crazy corner, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic issued a statement voicing their disappointment, the AP reports:

"While we were aware of Kurt's image being used with two Nirvana songs, we didn't know players have the ability to unlock the character," they said. "This feature allows the character to be used with any kind of song the player wants. We urge Activision to do the right thing in 're-locking'
Kurt's character so that this won't continue in the future."
