I don't know what she knows about technique but she loves music and she was funny/entertaining when she did a week on SYTYCD last season. I say hooray!
She loves the show so much; she has a lot of contestants on her show and her banter with Simon Cowell, when he's been on, is pretty funny. I'm still on the fence.
Dan said Howard Stern is NOT going to be happy. Loves the show, hates her.
I'm not a big fan of Ellen's - though I will admit she makes me laugh sometimes. She is a funny person, and I know people like her show - but she's not really my brand of humor. I don't really go for the self deprecating-awkward schtick, I'm more of a dick jokes guy.
I just don't get how a comedienne adds to that show. Is it going to be a 1970s variety show now? Punch lines after every performance? What the hell does Ellen know about vocal training? What does she offer this show that goes to the core mission of identifying the next pop idol?
I do not like it, Squid I am.
Then again, I don't really watch the show except for once in a while at the beginning and at the end.
Ellen was on the news this morning, according to my Idol-loving mom, and she said she'd be representing the deomgraphic of people who actually buy albums to listen to just for enjoyment, as opposed to Randy, Simon, and Kara. She said something like that. And that makes sense.
Not to compare her to Rosie O'Donnell simply because they're both gay, but a lot of people used to refer to Rosie as a "nice" comedienne. I agreed, sort of, because she never really made fun of a lot of famous people, like, say, Kathy Griffin. (who I also really like) But I don't like Rosie anymore. She got kind of crazy. And seems angry a lot.
I've seen Ellen a lot on her show and doing stand up and I don't recall her ever making fun of other famous people, besides herself, for a laugh. And there's a lot to be said for that....that she's been around for as long as she has doing the same kind of humor without running out of material. I find her consistently amusing.
That being said, I don't know if she'll add anything to Idol or not. This one probably jumped the shark last year when they added Kara and I think this is further proof.
HA! at www.thesuperficial.com 's comment on this subject:
Of course, this casting is perfect because if there's one demographic American Idol was missing, it's the key middle-aged lesbians who look like Owen Wilson audience. Now FOX can bring in those huge ad bucks from golf club manufacturers and turkey baster conglomerates. Well played.
I hated Rosie when she was the queen of nice, it seemed so fake to me. Then I saw her R Family Cruise documentary and I have a whole new respect for her. I think shes a wonderful giving person and I share most of her opinions.
I dont know too much about Ellen, Ive only seen bits of the show. She seems safe and plain and I guess thats why Idol picked her. Shell offer the nice and encouraging comments Paula was known for.
I like Ellen. I think she'll add a bit of goofy to the show.
Seriously, when has Idol been completely professional? She will likely have to pull off a bit of 'serious' on occasion but I'd rather see her in that chair than others I could think of.
Paula Abdul was stunned at being permanently replaced on American Idol by Ellen DeGeneres Privately, Paula is very upset. Shes never going to admit it publicly but this stung, said a source close to the Fox situation. Even though publicly Paula has not even hinted that she might return to the show, privately she still believed a last-minute deal could be worked out, but Fox execs had already moved on.
And even better - wwtdd's cut:
Hahaha, you suck Paula! What dimension does this goofy bitch live in where inanimate objects are somehow hard to replace or deserve million dollar salaries. If Idol misses Paulas contribution, they can just pump a tank of nitrous into Ellens dressing room then lock her in a dryer for an hour.
I know it's wrong but I'd get a bit of twisted pleasure out of it if Ellen's salary for Idol is equal to or more than what Paula wanted.
According to Howard Stern, who HATES Ellen, supposedly the decision was between Ellen and Taylor Dayne. Howard (and probably his fans, now) think Taylor would have been the better choice because of her history in the industry.. It would been like hiring a cheaper version of Paula, if you ask me. If this is true, it would appear the producers picked the more popular and current of the two. And why wouldn't/shouldn't they?
Does she qualify for the job? Does she know a great deal about what constitutes great singing? Is she capable of discerning whether an act is good or not? Isn't that what they are seeking? If it is a lightweight foil to Simon who's not spaced out . . . then maybe she's the one.
