Piggy-backing off of Moby's thread, do you think Starbucks will FAIL miserably with the instant coffee products? Americans don't really drink instant coffee. Europeans on the other hand...
I tried a sample of it today (not in Seattle) and it was good.
I don't know, I can't get over the cost per pack. If I'm going to pay a dollar for a cup of coffee, I would rather just walk across the street to Starbucks and buy one.
How are they going to get that burnt, chemically taste into a crystal? Are they just going to crap in a bag and label it? What's the Italian word for instant?
I just assumed they were trying to market this towards the people who buy their canned double shots and bottled frappucinos and what naught. If that's the case, they've already got buyers, right? Or is this a different crowd?

In England instant coffee is very common. It's one of those war things that never went away, plus they drink more tea. Brewed is more thought of on the continent, but I saw a lot of instant when I was in Germany, too.
And yeah, I think the market is more the yuppie crowd.
Oh yeah they have brewed - my friend Paul who lives there won't touch instant. But for example, at work, you are much more likely to find instant than brewed coffee like most workplaces here have.
One time a co-worker of mine who worked in my company's Paris office visited our office for a few days. I lost track of the number of times he said, "American coffay is sheet!! I must find real coffay!"
Another memorable quote from that guy was, "All these beautiful American women you have here, and they all wear the miniskirt. You know, they love the miniskirt because it gets the air all up there."
I don't know if these are any good or not, but I was working on my laptop in a Starbucks yesterday, when a barista girl came up to me and asked me if I drink coffee. I had a cup on the table, that SHE sold me. I said "ummm yea." Then she started telling me all about the new instant stuff and told me I could get a free sample. I said "Okay." She walked away and never got me my free sample.
I'm a fan of really dark roasts. Their Four Country Blend was awesome. I've only had one I didn't like there - and I don't remember what about it I didn't like.
I bet there are some people who would shell out the extra cash for "green" labeled organic, free range, free trade, sustainable, indigenously massaged instant starbutt coffee. I'm not one of them, however.
I took their pepsi challenge this morning when I went in for my pumpkin latte (finally feels like fall here, yay. or yea). And got it wrong. Actually they tasted pretty much identical to me. But, I seldom drink black coffee. Everyone else I overheard taking it got it wrong too.
