GAH! !!!

Through our Animal Welfare Advisory Council, stun methodology and technique is constantly being reevaluated. New methods are being researched and tested for both welfare advancements and viability that will ultimately determine the adoption of improved practices.

KFC continues to evaluate the current state of technology and conduct research into best practices for selective breeding, antibiotic use, mechanical catching and stunning systems, both electrical and controlled atmosphere, and to work with suppliers to test the improved technologies.

KFC has intensively investigated the mechanical harvest of broilers, and continue to work with the manufacturers of this equipment so that welfare considerations will continue to be addressed as this technology moves closer to feasibility.

____________

Animal Welfare Program

Yum! Brands, parent company of KFC, is committed to the humane treatment of animals.

Yum! Brands is the owner of restaurant companies and, as such, does not own, raise or transport animals. However, as a major purchaser of food products, we have the opportunity, and responsibility, to influence the way animals supplied to us are treated. We take that responsibility very seriously, and we are monitoring our suppliers on an ongoing basis to determine whether our suppliers are using humane procedures for caring for and handling animals they supply to us. As a consequence, it is our goal to only deal with suppliers who promise to maintain our high standards and share our commitment to animal welfare.

To assist us in that effort, Yum! Brands formed the KFC Animal Welfare Advisory Council, which consists of highly regarded experts in the field. The Council provides us with information and advice based on relevant data and scientific research. The Animal Welfare Advisory Council has been a key factor in formulating our animal welfare program.

In consultation with our Council, KFC has developed guidelines and audit programs for our suppliers in the broiler industry. We were also a prominent player in the joint effort conducted by the National Council of Chain Restaurants and the Food Marketing Institute to develop comprehensive guidelines for all species of farm animals.

KFC has implemented a farm level audit program - a program which is industry-leading in the areas of poultry care and handling.

_____

I find this list of "Advisory Council" um... interesting. ANYONE on the Council WITHOUT a financial interest in Chickens!???

Advisory Council
The Council's experts provide information, advice and direction on animal welfare issues, and recommends appropriate courses of action. The Council works directly with both Yum! Brands senior managers as well as suppliers within the system. Our Council consists of:

Dr. Paul B. Siegel, Ph.D
University Distinguished Professor Emeritus
Department of Animal and Poultry Sciences
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

Dr. Charles L. Hofacre, DVM, MAM, Ph.D
Professor, Department of Avian Medicine

Dr. Bruce Webster

Dr. Wayne J. Kuenzel
Center of Excellence for Poultry Science
University of Arkansas

Dr. Kellye Pfalzgraf
Director of Animal Wellbeing
Tyson Foods, Inc.

In addition to these council members, several Yum! Brands executives and other employees participate regularly on animal welfare initiatives. These include:

Doug Hasselo, Chief Food Innovation Officer

Along with Steve Penava, Senior Director of Purchasing from the Unified Foodservice Purchasing Co-op, the organization responsible for purchasing food for all companies under the Yum! umbrella.

Dude, cottonseed AND palm oil? On the grilled, "healthy" chicken? That's a heart attack on a plate right there. How disgusting is that picture of the actual food, anyway? Uck.

Kentucky grilled chicken tastes awful. One of those supermarket rotisserie chickens is about 1000 times better.

Cooking has become a great pleasure to me.

I was never a big fan of KFC anyway, so I don't see myself eating it anytime soon.

Good god that looks awful.  That thing laying next to the chicken leg looks like a rat coin purse from the other thread *barf*

I am disappointed in the mashed potatoes.  That and the corn on the cob was the only thing I would eat whenever KFC was the choice establishment when I was little.  I haven't been back in a looooong time.

I haven't tried the grilled chicken yet and probably won't. I go to KFC for the fried original recipe. YUM!The slaw is OK.I love the mashed "potatoes" even though they taste nothing like potatoes.

I think KFC is unfairly singled out because of the video of chicken handlers being cruel. It's not like EVERY kind of meat you consume isn't treated just as bad.

I don't freak out over ingredient lists either. You mentioned mashed potatoes being salt butter and milk. Yes, at home that's what you make them with. Now list all of the ingredients for your butter or margarine, call salt sodium chloride, list the ingredients of your milk (probably contains vitamin A Palmitate)Using the big scary words in ingredient lists and intentionally taking bad photos of food is just a stupid gimmick.

Here's a thought, if you're a vegan who thinks everything that isn't 100% organic is total crap that should never come into contact with your perfect life vessel, DON'T EAT FAST FOOD! Enjoy your bug poop ridden whole grains and aphid infested broccoli.

Yeah, but at what point does food, stop being food and just start being chemicals?

We buy our eggs at a place that raises chickens in a field- the color of the yolks are what is really different- the yolks are bright yellow- almost surreal. The taste of the egg is different too, more egg like. When you buy stuff from the supermarket, everything is so industrialized, it tastes like food substitute- not real food.

I agree. We raised chickens and had a garden on the farm. The eggs are better when the chickens are healthy, the shells are thicker and the yolks are richer. Garden ripened veggies are far superior in taste to store bought stuff too even if you use pesticides   < GASP > to keep them from being eaten by bugs.

If you want to point out what you believe to be problems with the food supply and have some data to make your point, I'm all eyes. But singling out one particular chain  restaurant is bogus. The ingredients they use can be found in every restaurant and every grocery store.

If you would like to see a decline in the use of chemicals in your food, great. People have heard your call and you now have the option to pay twice as much for food that meets the standards to be called organic. I would guess, however, that we do not have the capability to feed the entire nation on totally organic foods. Industrialized farming and chemical usage are part of the reason we have 300 million people in the country that aren't starving to death. How do we feed everyone without doing that?
