Another "Would You be Mad?" Thread

A semi-good friend and I decided to go see a movie a few weeks ago. We haven't followed through yet. Two nights ago, while speaking to my BF (who is jealous of my friendship with Movie Girl and teases me relentlessly whenever we hang out and is only semi-kidding), I mentioned this. She asks if she can go, too. I said of course, and cleared it with Movie Girl. All systems go.

In trying to decide when to go, we had two options as of this morning. Go tonight at 7:30 or go sometime Saturday. My BF and I don't really want to go Saturday....we kind of want to hang out with our families. (her because she works full time and me because it's the first weekend in a month that Dan won't be working on the bathroom) Movie Girl doesn't want to go on a weeknight. She recently self-daignosed herself with chronic fatigue syndrome and a 7:30 show is too late for her.

So....my BF decides to call another friend and just go with her. Tonight. When I can't go, only because I made the original plans with Movie Girl and she doesn't want to go tonight.

Mad? A little. I think more of it's jealousy. I LOVE going to the movies and I barely ever go. And I'd love to just be able to decide to go to a movie one day and just go without worrying about other people's plans, feelings, my kids' afterschool activities, or anything else.

So basically, I'm probably just being a big freaking baby. Sorry for the vent.

"And I'd love to just be able to decide to go to a movie one day and just go without worrying about other people's plans, feelings, my kids' afterschool activities, or anything else."

There is an easy way to accomplish this - go by yourself. The first time is a little weird, but after that you will be like "Wow, going to the movies with other people kind of sucks!"

I go to the movies by myself all the time

I get to:
- pick what I want to see
- see it when I want. I can be spontaneous
- never miss a movie I want to see
- sit in silence without a chatty companion (people who talk during movies, even if they are my friends drive me NUTS. It's so rude.)
- see two movies in a row, if I want

I see no downside

I highly recommend it happy.gif

There is no downside. going to the movies alone is fantastic.

Only caveat - I probably wouldn't see a very scary movie or a very romantic one alone.

Also if you go by yourself and there is a talker nearby you can get up and move without a hassle.

I've been to the movies by myself one time, and I LOVED IT. I was pregnant with Megan at the time, and she's five and a half. Time for a repeat!

We were going to see Paranormal Activity, which I wouldn't want to go see alone. And, as I was getting off the phone with the BF, she was saying "Well, I'll be sure to call you as soon as I can and tell you whether or not I think you should go." And I'm thinking "NO. DON'T SAY A WORD. YOU'LL RUIN IT. I'M GOING ANYWAY!"

Hmmm...a movie I could see myself...this may be my Monday activity, even if I do end up going this weekend.

That's funny because that's the one movie i probably would not go to see by myself either.

So you are officially not being a baby.

Although I will say that I do enjoy going to the movies from time to time with Ginny, I LOVE going by myself. For all the same reasons already mentioned.

In fact, I did it last night. I found out that the Toy Story double feature was still at my local theater and had to go. I was the only one in there and left smiling.

It's like he channels dead crazy people.

I attempted to go to the movies once by myself when I was stuck in Spokane WA with nothing to do, but none of the showtimes worked. I have gone to a restaurant by myself a couple of times now, and I actually do enjoy that.

I like going to restaurants by myself too. Especially if I have a good book.

I go to the movies all the time by myself. I went to see Zombieland last week alone. It was awesome. I didn't have to share my popcorn, and no one gave me the stink eye when I asked for lots of fake butter on it. I went to a 12:30 show on Tuesday afternoon, and expected to be alone in the theater, but there was a bunch of people there, most of them alone, too! Rock on, solo movie goers!

I saw it last week and wouldn't say don't waste your money, it was okay.

I picked it to have a scary movie that would make me jump while in the theater but let me sleep that night without fear of someone stabbing me through my bed (a la 80's horror movies). Mission accomplished. I jumped a lot and enjoyed the entire theater reaction to the scary happy.gif

Eta to answer your question, nope I wouldn't be mad... I live by the motto if it doesn't matter in 5 years, it doesn't matter. Corny, but saves me being mad at little things.

Thanks, liu. It won't matter in five years, that's true. I guess it just bothers me that there are some people who take others' feelings into consideration, even for a second, and others who don't. Plus I realized yesterday that out of the two friends I spend the most time with, talking to, etc., one does whatever she wants no matter what and the other one just wants everyone to do things her way. And I'm neither.

But totally over it. And am still going to see the movie.

Glad you are over it... and I agree that self focused friends are frustrating.

Also glad you're going to see it still happy.gif
