When I went to bed last night the forecase was calling between 1.5-2.25 feet of snow this week. Which pretty much would have meant I would get at least one day to stay home.
We got about 5 inches of snow here in Memphis, too. I stayed the night at my dad's house last night since Nathan had to work and I wasn't sure if the power would go out. My daddy built a fire and we had cocoa in our jammies. This morning he got up before me and cleared my windshield and got my heater running so I wouldn't have to get into a cold car. He's pretty much the best dad ever.

This morning on a teleconference the client, who lives in Overland Park Kansas, said she is working from home due to the snow. The cool thing was when she said her son was outside right now building an igloo.
Took the girls sledding yesterday. Both were fearless and we had a ball.
We sledded at "Hospital Hill" which is the best hill I've ever sledded - it's next to the former State Hospital here that tOdd once wrote about visiting as a creepy story. It's nice because one side is 'bunny' the other 'insane.' We stayed on the bunny side, obviously.
After making that treacherous drive home from work last night, Im happy and warm in bed with pjs, a book, you guys, hot tea and a warm silly dog. School was supposed to start this morning at 7:30 so I am happy to sleep in. I guess I am going to try to have to get this dog to go outside with me at some point.
Well, we're either getting 3-6 inches or 8-12 inches here in Philly beginning tomorrow afternoon. As much as I hate snow, I wish we had a firm accumulation so I know whether to look forward to a day off or not.
My company won't shut down for 6 inches but for 8 inches it might.
My dad made a castle fort in front of our house after a big snow. I'll see if I can find a picture. It was so fun - made the bricks from a big cardboard box, and when we used up all the snow in the front yard, we had to start getting it from the back and used the sleds for transportation. Might have a pic on facebook... Looks like I don't have it scanned in yet...
And when I was in 5th grade, the OTHER 5th grade's class had a super-fun teacher, and after a big, perfect-packing snow he got permission from his whole class (parents) to have the kids build an igloo in front of the school and spend the night in it. I sooo wanted to be in that class! They got on the news.
Can't find pictures of either. boo. But here's a rock-star snowman from the last snow:
I think the schools here won't open until next week. We can't get down our driveway without sailing into our neighbor's house. All the roads are covered in ice. My kids are boogie boarding down my other neighbor's lawn. I am running out of wine. This is the highway access road near my house:
I come from the north so never seen the icy conditions that the south gets, however I never understood leaving your car abandoned in the middle of the road. Do you just turn the car off, get out and then walk... somewhere? When do you come back for it so it isn't in the way... Parked alongside the road I can understand. In the middle is where I get lost.
Is all of this because the city services are ill prepared to handle the weather? I don't get it. I grew up in Nebraska. As soon as the snow started falling, they were out clearing the roads. Preparation was made in advance of storms. I can recall very very few times when we were actually "snowed in".
I look at that picture you posted Tr00 and honestly I think to myself I could drive in that. I DID drive in those conditions!
Yeah, I guess so Rory. I do know that some cities have those elevated bump things between the lanes so you can't actually scrape the streets without doing damage to them.
I found out the difference between sanding trucks and salting trucks the other night.
I was driving down the highway - there was a salting truck a mile or so ahead of me that I was slowly catching up to. Instead of solid salt they spray a liquid salt mixture on the road.
When I got to the gas station, I looked at my car and my dark coloured car was WHITE from the windows down. I was both amazed and kinda pissed.
I've heard my brother (DOT Highway Department worker - he plows highways) carry on conversations about road salt for a ridiculously long time. There are lots of different varieties and they cost different prices and they affect pavement deterioration differently, yadda yadda yadda...
He's probably out prepping for the storm right now.
There are also 'enhancers' that you can add to the salt, spray directly onto the street before you salt, and so forth that can stretch your salt dollars. Apparently the price for salt has more than doubled in the past few years, and the localities around here like to bitch about it.
The roads are covered in ice. Even if you think YOU can drive in it, 95% of the other drivers can NOT drive in it, but do anyway. You should see the pictures from around town.
And that is a feat today because I just got turned away from the dmv after waiting twenty minutes and then again after 1/2 hour a
at the social security office.
Haven't left the house since Saturday. So glad I got plenty of groceries (and wine). Our offices have been closed for now the 3rd day, speaking of things that never happen.
Heard weatherman this morning saying there's snow on the ground in every state except FL. There's your useless fact of the day.
I'm starting to get a little stir crazy, even though I've been working some. These snowmen. They have peepers. Peepers to watch. To watch for a moment of weakness then BAM comes the knock in the head.

Took some pictures of the snow day here. Just got through shoveling some of the heaviest, densest snow ever. Seriously, it looks fluffy and nice - but it's like clay. It's so dense that I actually stood on the pile of snow in front of our house and my feet only sunk in about four or five inches (after I patted it down with a shovel).
View from the front steps.
Only shoveled a small path on the sidewalk - there's no place to put it anymore.
Our neighbors to the left haven't even started moving snow yet. Poor imbeciles.
Definitely a path going up to the right.
I stood on that snow pack - didn't go in much past my ankles. Heavy, heavy snow.
My humble abode. We have the first floor.
Back porch area.
From over the snow bank.

So what's the temp? When it snowed here on Christmas, it was 30-34 degrees. It was the best packing snow I can remember, and there were snowmen everywhere. It was awesome. Especially awesome because it didn't stick to the roads, so driving wasn't even really messy.
ETA-
Also, I shoveled once so my dog would have a path, and a place to hang out in the cold (She was a Great Pyrenese and LOVED the cold) and here's what she did after all my hard work (I think I've posted this before, but it's funny...):

I've decided to stay home today... even though just going in late probably would have been sufficient to beat the bad weather. I'm not trying to impress anyone, and I brought some work home.
I really enjoy working from bed while wearing polka dot pyjama pants
we just finished shoveling about an hour ago. i started around 10:30 and my roommate joined be around 11. our driveway is a huge pain to shovel because it's up against the neighbor's driveway on one side and our house on the other, so the snow has to be walked to the front yard, or far end of the driveway, and with this much snow, it piles up fast.
honestly, we spent most of our time bickering over who was moving more snow, who was faster, what the best approach was, how long it would take, whether coffee was better black or with cream, and who almost ran over whom while moving the car.
here's the house
nosey, keeping an eye on the neighbors
somewhere under that snowbank was my car
fake action shot of the portuguee shoveling
frozen strands of drool flying
...aaaand the back... harvey loves the snow- in fifteen minute increments. he cries and cries while i bundle up to take him out, plays like crazy for fifteen minutes, and then cries to come back in. ten minutes later he cries again to go out. i'm running out of dry clothes!!
anyway, here's the condition of the back yard (apparently the portuguee shoveled the deck, but not the steps, lol!) it's so deep, harvey pretty much has to swim to his ball
yeah, i thought that when i moved in, but the giant has been working at snow removal at a local hospital since 2am and will probably not be home for hours, and the portuguee doesn't have a car, so i have to chip in. (or at least stand around with a shovel in my hand and occasionally move some snow )
my rottie x malamute is just like the pyrenees, he will curl up in a ball in the snow and lie there in a blizzard until he is completely covered in snow. this is his faaavorite time of year, he'd live outside if we'd let him.
It's 73 degrees and clear skies in Honokaa right now but the weather dorks say it's gonna downpour this afternoon.
Rest of This Afternoon
Mostly cloudy with occasional showers and scattered thunderstorms. Some thunderstorms may produce gusty winds. Locally heavy rainfall possible. Highs around 77 at the shore to around 64 at 4000 feet. Northwest winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 50 mph. Chance of rain 80 percent.

Here are a few pics of how things look in CT right now...well at least in my parking lot, which is as far as I'm going to get tonight.
Looking through the slider
Same area looking from outside
This is a covered hallway, but we still had a bunch of snow drift into the hallway.
From the parking lot on the opposite side of the building
I guess the people that own those three cars that are straight ahead, don't need to go anywhere for a few days.
The plow only made one pass, several hours ago. Even though many people shoveled around their cars, they will still have trouble getting out of the lot.
We were expecting snow Thursday night but only got a dusting. Two hour delay Friday morning; the sun was out, shining beautifully. When our county has a two hour delay, the director at my school delays OUR school opening by an hour so I can get the kids to school. I don't think she knows that one hour and two hours are not the same amount of time and that her one hour delay does not help me in any way. Luckily, Dan was able to drop them off and go in late.
Got another dusting Saturday morning.
We were hoping to get walloped yesterday and last night. The county closed the school an hour early, even though it hadn't even started snowing. In fact, it didn't start until around dinnertime! When we got up this morning, there was about an inch and a half on the ground, the roads were mostly just wet, and AGAIN, school was delayed by two hours. And Dan came to the rescue, slept in, and got the girls to school at 10.
Today is my first snow day of the school year and I am so glad...I slept in until 9 this morning and now I'm going to spend the day catching up on my marking (and watching the dogs try to sand-worm their way through the drifts). Rob has the day off too so we get to hang out! PLUS, our neighbour (who we share a driveway with) has a snowblower, and he always clears our side of the driveway as well.
We had a snow day for the first time in a long time yesterday. I had BIG plans to go out and make some type of snow creature, but I was too lazy to go outside. I made muffins and hot chocolate instead.
So glad you got to sleep in, Louise! I hope you feel much better!
poor peppy, it must be hard for such a little guy.
i was walking a newfoundland at work today, and even he couldn't figure out how to maneuver. the snow was up to his shoulders. he finally peed in the parking lot.
i took a picture of harvey peeing because it looked so funny...
Tonight, we're getting 50mm of rain, along with high winds (up to 60 km/h). Tomorrow, we're getting another 50mm of rain, along with even higher winds (up to 110 km/h). I keep thinking "man, if this were snow, I would so have a day off!"
Minnesota hit 83 degrees today! Sunny, clear day. Beauty weather.
The rest of the week hangs pretty close in those temps too.
With humidity!!!!
I had the air on in the tractor cab and with opening the trailer for deliveries,
the refer got all ice frosted up and was chugging too hard to maintain zero degrees.
Something like in the beginning of August for temps.
And I was not expecting this.
Babysitting (defrosting the cooling fins) the trailer like the middle of summer.
But hey, beats early snow and ice!
Though it is making everything real dry and all fire hazardy.
Western side of the state had the "don't even fart out here" signs up.
From time to time, the usual moment seems terribly beautiful.
