Stay safe San Diego! Anny texted me to say that the power is out from where she is to the Mexican border, and there's rioting/looting happening (not really where she is, I heard that...) she just said the stores are locking up.
Actually it was some jerkwad in Arizona that flipped the wrong switch or something.
Man, was a miserable effing night. Roads were jammed all over, my house was like a blast furnace and we had no way of getting info unless we listened to the car radio. It was still 80 degrees inside my condo at 1:30 this morning.
But, we made due and I kicked whitey's ass in Scrabble and we tied in Trivial Pursuit and I didn't get mad even once. (He doesn't like playing games with me but he's a cheater so it's his fault anyway.)
I'm SO glad the power is back on and I'm def. getting more emergency stuff now. Our cell phones didn't even work!
I imagine either the cell towers also went down since almost everything was out or there were so many people trying to make calls the systems were overloaded. It's common for cells not to work in emergencies.
The article says the guy in AZ flipping the wrong switch caused San Onofre to go offline though - that's what I was talking about and using as an excuse to post giant concrete tits.
Luckily, I left work at 2PM and the power outage didn't happen until 4-ish so I missed all the traffic snarls. SO-BOO got to the house around 4:30-5 and immediately went to the nearest convenience store to get ice for the frig. He said he was one of three customers in the AM/PM but within minutes the parking lot was swarmed but the store had locked the doors. People were yelling and pounding on the doors to be let in... kinda scary. So he was able to get us blocks of ice for the frig and the only loss we had was milk and eggs. Not bad!
It was tough to get texts/calls through (likely overload from people doing the same). I had learned through a combination of AM transistor, texting my niece in Phoenix, and texting Ginny (no affect in LA) that San Diego down through Mexico was out. I didn't know about AZ (Yuma) at the time. It sounded super scary. We got flashlights, candles out. SO-BOO strapped on a head lamp thing (much to my dismay).
I was SUPER BUMMED OUT that I was missing the Saints/Packers game - oh the humanity! So we decided around 9 to take a walk to the beach. Part way there it occurred to me that this might not be the brightest idea if people were going to loot in our little beach community. But our neighborhood bar (Cass Street Bar) had generators going and was open AND SHOWING THE FOOTBALL GAME! ZOMG! SO FUN!
I didn't have my ID (but, yeah, not like anyone would think I wasn't over 21) but just to be safe I waited until the bouncer was distracted and slipped in the door. SO-BOO (always prepared) had his wallet. The waitresses coveted SO-BOO's head lamp and it was very funny. Bar was super dark with candles everywhere (generator just for the ice and TV). We watched the game and met tons of neighbors of all ages from all over Pacific Beach and shared pitchers of beer. Everyone was in high spirits and random "ARMAGEDDON!" toasts would ring out from time to time with everyone shouting back "CHEERS".
