The lights tell you what time it is.

Did anyone else thing "quarter to three" meant 25 minutes until 3:00 when you were little...because a quarter was worth 25 cents? I think I was well into middle school before I made the connection that they call it a QUARTER because it's a quarter of a dollar.

I still get all messed up when people say 'quarter of...'. I can never remember whether it means 15 minutes until X hour or 15 minutes into X hour.

Does anybody have a mnemonic device for it? It's been 31 years and I'm fairly certain it's past the point of ever sticking.

Dude, you kill me. Don't you also have trouble with which side hot and cold is on? You need an assistant to follow you around, so you can get where you're goin, man. happy.gif

I hear you, Doc Z. I have the same trouble. It is also the reason I had (have?) trouble with fractions. The educational system wanted to hold me back in Second Grade because of this. There were many after school sessions and lots of tears.

I find, it's a logic problem.

If you ever read Ramona Quimby books by Beverly Cleary, Ramona thought that a "quarter to" also meant 25 minutes til and was late for school.

I like this watch from Thinkgeek:
http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/watches/eb57/?srp=5

I don't think I would ever wear it though.

I never had trouble telling time but it amazez me that a lot of kids these days can't read an analog clock.

I usually say "quarter of" instead of "quarter to".

I don't even really understand 'quarter to'. Is that quarter of an hour allotted to the hour at hand or is it a quarter of an hour until the next hour.

I'm pretty bad with these kinds of abstractions. If I say 'left', roughly 30% of the time, I'm referring to something on the right. Just last month, I was tooling around with an RC helicopter with Maestra and my brother and I said it was pitching to the left when it was actually pitching right at least half a dozen times. Over and over. They would correct me and I just kept saying the incorrect direction.

Also, I hate it when people round the time to quarter/half past/etc. If I ask you what time it is, please tell me it's 4:29. I'm not asking you what time it will be in one minute or five minutes. I want to know the time, as best your point-of-reference can convey.

Also! (I have time issues...)

If possible, set your clocks/watches to Coordinated Universal Time!

I'm with you on that one.
Is it quarter till or 14 minutes till? I'm not asking for an approximation.

I could care less about the exact time.

I am rarely late for anything I go to that is on a set time.

If you ask me what time it is, because you forgot your watch, or are too cheap to buy one for yourself, then you're getting whatever I feel like telling you. It's half past, look at your cell phone!

Yeah, I'm with y'all about wanting to know the exact time, so that clock wouldn't really be the best for me.

No, Kathleen, I was talking about money. I was older when I realized that they called the quarter a quarter because it was 1/4 of a dollar.

I got that but I thought you miswrote dollar for hour, since you were talking about time.

Re: cool clock

I think the clock looks esthetically interesting. It isn't practical . . . or maybe I'm just so old that I cannot get over reading time through analog or digital clocks.

BTW, I hate 24 hr. clocks. Whenever I hear 15:00 I have to convert to 3 P.M. in my head. (You can tell I was never in the army LOL).

See, I'm just the opposite. 24 Hour time makes the most sense to me but, I'm fine with 12 hour time too.
