It is a day where communities across the country, and across the world, can unite in celebrating diversity and raising awareness to stop homophobic, transphobic & all forms of bullying.
The International Day of Pink was started in Nova Scotia when 2 straight high school students saw a gay student wearing a pink shirt being bullied. The 2 students intervened, but wanted to do more to prevent homophobic & transphobic bullying. They decided to purchase pink shirts, and a few days later got everyone at school to arrive wearing pink, standing in solidarity. The result was that an entire school stopped homophobic & transphobic bullying.
Pretty cool, right?
Rick Mercer (google him, he's hilarious) along with some less interesting people like politicians are coming to the University of Ottawa today for a Gala - which I just assumed would be spelled "Gay-La" (is that wrong?) and I would like to go but I'm not sure if I am supposed to be all dressy-dressy. What do you think? Can I get away with jeans and a pink tee?
My friend is asking her daughter who came to do a presentation for us today. She's in high school and is an activist and an organizer of support groups and such and such and makes me feel old and all whathaveIbeendoingwithmylife and...there's something in my eye!
