4 digit numbers mean they were conventionally grown.
5 digit numbers starting with number 8 means they are genetically modified (GMO).
5 digit numbers starting with number 9 means they were organically grown.

That bread thing - Snopes mentions it, but you really do have to know the codes for your preferred manufacturer and store schedule in order to use it. There is no industry standard.

I know somebody in the bread business and this drives him nuts, people looking at the color coding and tearing up shelves when it's not even close to what they actually do.
