Not sure if you are talking...

about the change in the Gamo's trigger or the Gamo Trigger club.http://www.airrifle.co.za/showthread.php?p=143931

A few months ago, not sure maybe last year, I believe Charlie De Tuna posted some info about this on this forum.

But I am not sure when the new trigger assembly came out and nor do I know when the club started.

Ask them on their forum athttp://www.airrifle.co.za/showthread.php?p=143931

Try Compasseco...

at: http://www.compasseco.com"
They have Cleaning & Accessory kits for different models. For the B-3/4 models the kit that should work is the Item No.; AS-CLGkit, for the Fast Deer model the kit that should work is the Item No.; TF-CLGkit4

The kits come with a main spring, trigger springs, breech seals and a piston seal, plus a cleaning rod.

But first write them by e mail to see if they have these kits on stock.

What's the point

by (Login chet0127)

Bought a QB2 kit for my plain vanilla B-3. figured I'd play around tuning a cheapy to get the hang of the process. The spring in the kit says made in china and measures 35 coils, .742" OD and wire size is .120" OD. Wire size measurements may be off .001" due to phosphating of the wire. Any way, my question is why put another Chinese made spring in an air rifle made in China? The spring is probably the same quality as the original. I can see in this case with the original being damaged, but if you wanted to improve operation etc, why not go with USA made spring? And where do you get them? Maccari?

to get your trigger working.

Sad news is I don't where you can get a spring's guide for the B-3-1. I guess when you said your trigger is missing you meant, the trigger's end fell off, this often happens to this model, it happened once to a friend of mine, he lost the trigger, the dam pin fell off by itself out in the field. Also the pins on this model are not flaten in the trigger's assembly and when you take off the stock, all the pins fall out from the trigger's assembly if you are not careful. The stock is the only thing that hold those pins in place. I had to make the trigger's end out of sheet metal for a B-3-1's trigger for my friend. I took a piece of sheet metal cut it more or less into the shape of the trigger, drill the pin holes and bent it to fit the trigger's stub. I used a small nail as a pin, cut it to the right size and I used a punch to flaten it's other end down. The sheet metal trigger I made did not have the round shape of the real trigger for the finger, it was straight, but it worked just fine anyway.

I guess you could make a spring's guide out of a piece of a small water pipe or some other type of round metal, cut it to the right size, polish it, take one end, cut it with a hack saw, four cuts on the end about 1/4 of inch deep in a cross fashion and then bend them outwards, until the pipe can stand up alone straight and grind/file the end down round untill it fits well in the spring's chamber, also grind/file down the round bent part until the spring sits well on the pipe. Then lube it with moly paste, it should work just fine as long as the pipe is a little smaller than the inside dia. of the spring and cut to the right length of the spring's guide.

But thinking twice, I am not sure if a water pipe is the right size (dia.) for a B-3-1 spring's guide, so check the size first to see if it fits inside the spring or find some other type of metal pipe the right size.

Another way would be to find a piece of round metal the right size for the spring's guide, cut it to right size and find a large metal washer the right size for the chamber and weld the washer to the metal post.

Eddie

Hi all, I new to the forums,I normally frequent the Canadian Airgun Forums (yet I am an American).

I am coming here today to let you all know that the NewMatics PM16http://newmaticsmfg.com/products/NewMatrics%20PM16.htm is finally upon us!

I am working with NewMatics for the launch & am happy to inform you guys that next week our CEO is going to Pyramyd Airgun Mall to set up sales of the PM16.

I am told that production is starting in a couple weeks.

The PM16 has been an internet airgun "myth" for nearly a decade now, since Defense Review & Tom Gaylord did reviews for NewMatics way back when.

If you wish to subscribe to email updates for the PM16, or have questions, please email me at: pm16@gmx.com

Off to another forum now to spread the word, thanks for your time!

Help with a B-4-2

by (Login RMONTER)

I have recently applied Eddie's air gun juice to my rifle, but during the
process I managed to apply a small amount of wd40 to my pivot point for the cocking arm.
And this is causing the pivot to slip right out. What can I apply to it so it does not
slit out anymore?

Sounds like the pin of the pivot...

by (Login Adiberts)
Forum Owner

point is worn out on the stamped side of the pin. Doesn't sound like the lube did that, sounds like the rim of the pin that keeps it in place is worn down.

Go to my page; "Rebuilding the B-4-2" and check the info under the photo of the 7th or 8th photo to see/read on how to fix it.http://air_guns.tripod.com/rebuilding_the_B-4-2.htm

This is a quote from that page, but it would be better if you checked out the photo, a photo tells a thousand words.

Quote; "Now here is where that orange punch with the cone shape point comes in. The cone of the punch must be wider than the cup of the pivot pin and the point must be shorter than the bottom of the cup of the pin. I had to use a grinder to give this punch the proper shape. The idea here is to bend the pivot pin cup's rim back to hold the pivot pin in place. To do this you need a flat hard metal surface to insure the other side of the pivot pin makes contact with the hard metal surface (notice I am using the flat hard surface of anvil/vise). Making sure everything is properly in place, hit the punch several times with a hammer hard in the center of the pivot pin's cup, to bend out the cup's rim. When done properly you can see that the pin is securely in place, the rim of pin's cup will cover the outer hole's edge."

Once I did not have the punch...

by (Login Adiberts)
Forum Owner

I was away from home, no equipment and a friend of mine had that problem with a old B-3-1, the povit pin kept on coming out due to the worn rim on the cone side of pin.

I used a big old Philps screw driver with a hammer to widen/flatten the rim of the pin. I used a pair of pliers underneath the pin as a base to be able to hammer down the rim of the pin with the Philps screw driver (to open/widen the cone side of the pin). Work pretty good, over a year later he told me the pin still holds in place.

But it would be better to do it the right way with the right punch and base.

CONFUSED

by (Login rgarms)

Can the guys on this forum please help me? I have been reading about pellet rifles for a solid month now and I just got my new Crossman Quest 1000 a few days ago. I am so confused I wont to shoot the gun but knowing its chineese made, and after all I have read I afraid to shoot it. Now for the questions.
Do I need to take the gun down and clean the shipping lubricants out and re lube it before I shoot it?
Do I use the lubes I have been reading about on this site or do I use Other products I have read about?
I guess i am suffering from information overload, I need a simple plan to follow and some definate product suggestions, so I can get on with shooting my new rifle. Please HELP

First air gun?

by Bill (Login blklion)

If this is your first air gun then I wouldn't recommend you tear into it. The Quest 1000 is a powerful air rifle and the spring removal isn't something a newbie should attempt unless they have the proper tools to do so.

Since it's a breakbarrel rifle the spring is easy to get to by simply removing the reciever from the stock. Any lubing can be accomplished from the slot on the underside. Lately I've resorted to simply using a spray lubricant manufactured by Zep products called ZEP 2000. it flows nicely and, once the vehicle evaporates, leaves a good, tacky, pressure resistant film. It's silicon based so there's little worry about residual getting into the compression chamber and causing detonation. Other prescribed spring lubes are good as well but not as easy to apply without disassembly.

Eddie's moly-lube miture will work well for a chamber lube and can be administered by a drop through the chamber port in the breech. The trigger assembly can be lubed with or without removal from the rifle using any number of graphite or moly spray or liquid lubes. Just make sure to not over lube to the extent you have fluid running all over the gun. Moly and graphite will leave a silvery "stain" on the exposed metal surfaces detracting from the appearance of the rifle. It's best to apply lube with the trigger assembly inverted so that any exces lube runs away from the trigger itself.

Once the lube is applied in all areas work the barrel back and forth to distribute throughout the spring area and the chamber by merely half cocking and releasing. The trigger lube will disperse by working the trigger back and forth a few times then let the whole assembly sit overnight to allow excess vehicle to evaporate.

After you've put a considerable number of rounds through the rifle then it will be time to worry about a deeper and more investigative lubing and tuning; especially on the sear. You'll want to note if you're getting even "wear" and correct any high spots that might appear.

So do a simple lube and go have fun. The sooner you start shooting the rifle the quicker you'll learn what you might need to do to make it smoother and a more consistent shooter.

Many Thanks

by (Login rgarms)

Bill, I really appreciate the advise and suggestions, about what to do with this new Quest 1000. I was wondering where your source for the Zep 2000 is. I did a search on the internet but dont find a local source for it here in Ft Worth, Texas. Should I look at food prep maint suppliers, automotive suppliers?

I have been preparing for taking the rifle down have a spring compressor and a good general knowlwdge of what to expect inside the gun I was just confused as to what lubricants to use for the different ares of the mechanics. It seems there are as many ideas about what to use and where as there are people with computers and air guns.

I really love to shoot and ammo has gotten so expensive that I only purchase bare minimums, I have turned to air guns so that I can continue to shoot, its really nice in the back yard not having to go to the range. This Quest is my Second gun I started off with a GAMO 850 Carbine about a year a go. Been shooting it straight out of the box, and it still smokes once in a while. Plan to renew it when I get the Quest shootable.

Again thanks for your help and I hope you dont mind if I contact you again.

Source...

by (Login blklion)

My source for the Zep 2000 is at work. We buy it directly from Zep Products by the case and it's primary use/purpose is for lubing the hoist chains to eliminate wear between the links. Every now and then a partially empty can "finds" its way home with me and, initially, I was using it for lubing the chains on my motorcycle and snow blower. As an alternative recourse you might check into other motorcycle chain lubes as well. There are several that are not petroleum based, applied with a spray can and tack up well once the vehicle evaporates. The film strength is high on those products so you don't have to load up the spring area like you would with tar or other greases.

Yeah, a guy can get completely overloaded with info on this subject and lose the fun out of shooting.

I've been in and out....

by (Login blklion)

...but you've been fielding the questions fairly timely and quite well. This is the first one that sat for a day or so without reply so I thought I'd give Trebor something before he gives up on checking for a reply.

Sorry I've been sort of absent though. Work has kept me busy plus I've got a couple of other projects going that have taken most of my free time.

One of those projects is a "photo-sharing" deal with the other members of my army unit back when I was in the service. Over the decades some of us have seen a few of some of the others photos during the reunions or via the web but we all have quite a few that have never been shared...especially with some that have had no chance to attend a reunion. So the deal I offered was that if everyone scanned their photos and either emailed or burnt them to disk then I'd sort, label and compile them onto one disk and redistribute to those interested. I'm also working out a chronology of our units movements and activities spanning 1967 through 1970. Those two endeavors plus obtaining declassified documents, maps and other info has kept me pretty busy. Once this is all completed all my materials will be donated to the 1st Infantry Division Museums research library including a copy of the finished photo disk.

My life isn't all air rifles. LOL!

BBL Locking Device

by (Login hlm112833)

I really enjoy shooting my .22 B1 or B2 in my garage - not sure which one it is, but it's a break bbl Chinese model. I've cut the bbl down to 16", place a butt plate and white space liner on it, stripped and painted it camoflaged color, and added a home made bbl "silencer" made from a depleted CO2 cartridge. It's my "buggy rifle." Unfortunately, I broke the bbl locking lever while attempting to bend it a bit. Can anyone tell me where I can purchase a new locking lever? I'd hate to have to buy a complete rifle just to get an extra lever. Any suggestions? Thanks.

There are a couple of Chinese models...

by Eddie (Login Adiberts)

that have that locking device. First you must make sure which one you have and if it is a XS model, then you could write Johy Ye to see if he has that locking device at; xisico_usa@yahoo.com

If he doesn't have that part, since you are fond of that air gun your best bet would be to go to a mill shop and have it made.

Thinking twice, that model is a rather cheap priced air gun, you could buy another one and use it for parts. I think in this way in the long run, this would cost you less, you could use the parts from another one and have other spare parts future repairs.

Do a search on the internet to see what model you have, there are a few B 2-1s and B-1s, some are the Industry models and there is another that is the XS model.

Good luck.

? on Beeman GS950 bbl

by (Login JTPinTX)

I am not really into airguns big, but I bought a Beeman GS 950 last year for pest control. I am not really very pleased with the accuracy, it has never lived up to what I feel this gun is capable of from the research I have done on the net. I have quite a few rifles that will shoot very well, and I can also shoot my fathers RWS springer well also, so I don't think it is me.

I have looked down the bore several times, but always from the breech end. Last night I looked down from the muzzle end and was unpleasantly suprised. About 1/2" from the crown there are some bad machine marks in the barrel. Is this something Beeman should take care of? It has probably been over a year, and I don't have my receipt any more, but it seems as if it should fall under their materials and workmanship clause? Or should I chuck it up in the lathe and cut it down and put a new crown on it?

you don't even have a receipt of sale. Your best bet would be to cut it down and put a new crown on it.

Who knows, chopping that barrel down a little might even increase the air gun's fps. I have seen and read of cases where chopping down a springer's barrel a few inches has increased fps in the air gun.

Good luck on your project.

Shooting off...

by Eddie (Login Adiberts)
Forum Owner

20 rounds is all that should be needed for burning off excess lube. Shooting off a whole tin (250) rounds fast, might burn out a syn. piston seal in a spring piston air gun.

Once I sold a B-3-1 (.177 cal.) to a young client, he came back a hour and half later complaining that the air gun had lost a lot of power. Him and a friend had shot off 350 pellets in less than a hour, when I took it apart, the syn. piston seal was burned, the edges of the seal of the syn. piston seal were brown in color from all the heat that fast shooting caused, too much friction/heat from fast shooting. The seal had to be replaced.

ok so let me ask you this

by (Login craigfperry)

how many pellets does it take to break in a new or newly tuned snythetic seal air rifle.

i have heard "pro tuners" say 500 to 1000 to break in a seal.

Ok, there are...

by Eddie (Login Adiberts)
Forum Owner

different forms of "breaking in a springer". To burn off excess lube in a newly tuned springer only takes about 20 shots.

To find consistency in fps in a springer could take 500 shots, sometimes more for accurate target shooting. But this should be done slowly.

But what I am talking about is fast shooting, where over heating in a piston's chamber can do damage to the piston's seal. Remember, a car's motor has pistons, but a car's motor has a cooling system to prevent over heating, a springer does not.

I hope this helps.

QB36-2 trigger assembly(Help)

by (Login wgpinatl)

I recently had to disassemble my QB36-2(TF99) and the trigger assy is pretty tricky to put back togetther. Does any one have any tips or diagrams to help? overall I have been happy with the gun till spring broke into 4 pieces. I have polished and lubed and now I am anxious to get it back up and running.

Thanks,

to find a diagram of the TF 99 assembly nowadays. It is a old chinese model. I haven't fix one of these in long years, so I really don't remember off the bat. What I do remember it was fairly easy to deal with compared to other models, but all trigger assemblys can be tricky. It has a basic 2 stage trigger assembly. Maybe you can find a link that may help you on my link page at: http://air_guns.tripod.com/links.htm

If you can't find the info you need there, try the guys on the yellow chinese air gun forum at:http://www.network54.com/Forum/113813/

There are also a lot of links on Kermit's link page: http://www.kermitairgunclub.com/forums/

Kermit is a real nice guy, prehapes if you send him a message he might be able to help you find that diagram of a trigger assembly you are looking for.

I hope this helps.

Good luck.

and they used to sell them, but it looks like they ran out. The only model I found that is near the XS B-4-2 is the B-3-2 at: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000OP0DVC?tag=airguninforma-20&camp=15309&creative=374845&linkCode=st1&creativeASIN=B000OP0DVC&adid=0B185TMDRAH8XYDP2WNM

For the price, only $24.95 the B-3-2 is a bargain.

Maybe later on they will have that model (XS B-4-2) on stock.

There are a few differences...

by Eddie (Login Adiberts)
Forum Owner

for one the price, the XS B-4-2 is more expensive, the sights are different. The B-3-2 has a micro back sight, the XS B-4-2 has AK type (slide) back sight for short and long distance shots, also the XS B-4-2 is better quality.

The stocks on both are just about the same.

But for the price the B-3-2 in .177 cal. is a good buy.

I hope this helps.

it is a break barrel air gun. To cock it just put the butt end of the stock on your belly, grab the front part of the barrel and cock it down all the way, once cocked you place a pellet in the loading port of the barrel. Then you close the barrel all the way up, once it has locked in place, you take off the safety and then you aim and shoot it.

B-21 tune

by sniper1220 (Login sniper1220)

Hey guys I've had a B21 for a couple of years and i took it apart a long time ago to tune it up and I had found that the spring was broken. I ordered a new one along with some Molly paste from Jim Maccari, but i began school and i was busy with work, so i never got around to putting it back together. Well i got it out this past weekend to find that it was put in my shed outside not by me but by my mother!!! It had rust on the inside of the piston chamber area which i polished off for the most part. This kills me to see a gun in this condition, but now that I'm putting more time into it I'm wanting to tune it again. I was wondering exactly what i need to do to it to achieve a high but consistent velocity?? I don't remember correctly but should i lubricate the piston and the piston chamber or put Molly paste on them or Molly paste/slick 50 mix? I know i need to cover the spring in Molly paste but thats all i remember. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

to go on all mag. models. Make sure you polish up the chamber good before lubing. Then give the chamber and the piston's seal and the piston a light coat of moly paste. Also use moly paste on the main spring/it's ends and it's guide/post.

You can change...

by Eddie (Login Adiberts)

a main spring for a main spring about the same size with the same amount of loops or a couple of loops more with a heavier guage wire. This might improve fps.

But your best bet would be to just polish the outside and the ends of the main spring with 1200 grit wet sand paper and also polishing the main spring's post then lubing it all with moly paste.

Crosman Quest

Well, basically i have a spring press, homemade, and airgun, and want the main spring changed. What do i have to do first to get started. I have only taken the stock off of the gun and am not sure what to do now at all. Yes i am a newb to this, and would very much appreciate some direction since most of you are very experienced.

i noticed that the crosman quest 500 cocks only a 90 degree angle while the crosman quest 1000 extends quite far past that point. is it possible that there is just a stop on the cocking lever that only lets you cock it a certain distance and that actually still has the main spring not a smaller spring?

if so, how would i extend the cocking lever or if not when i replace the main spring would it still only cock at a 90 degree angle and still get the more power?

by Eddie (Login Adiberts)

but all springers have their angle of cocking, that is unless the main spring has been left cocked over time, this causes the main spring to reduce in size, to compress smaller, that changes the cocking angle.

Perhapes, this happened and a new main spring is needed.

If this is the case, check with Jim McCarie to see if he has a main spring that will fit your springer.

Another factor is...

by Eddie (Login Adiberts)
Forum Owner

the dia. of the main spring and the number of coils it has. In some case as long as the dia. of the main spring is the same of the orginal main spring a couple of more coils could improve fps in the air gun.

Coils are the loops in the main spring, a couple of coils can improve the fps as long as the main spring is dia. and the length of the main spring is the same of the orginal main spring.

But me, I would go with polishing the outside of the original main spring with wet 1200 grit sand paper, also polishing the ends of the main spring and the main spring's post and lubing it with moly paste.

Another tunning trick is to score the piston's chamber with 40 grit sand paper, to create grooves in the piston's chamber, but this should be done with care.
Over doing will ruin the piston's chamber.

Scoring is done with a rotating motion with a dowel, just enough to create small lines in the piston's chamber to reduce drag and create lube lines. It is only done in the first 70% of the piston's chamber.

But as I said, this should be done with care, overdoing this, will ruin a piston's chamber. Only a experence tunner should do this.

My advice, stick with main spring's tunning/polishing and lubing.

I hope this helps.

cocking angle....

by (Login blklion)

The cocking angle has little to do with the power of the air gun and only determines the ease of cocking. A longer "swing" for cocking contitutes more leverage which makes spring compression less strenuous.

Though I'm not familiar with the internal differences between the Quest models (500 and 1000) I would assume that the 1000 has a more powerful spring in it which most likely consists of one made with heavier gauge wire and, possibly, of longer length. Unless there are major differences in the receiver length and piston travel I would also assume they are of equal size in terms of piston diameter. The difference in cocking angle would then be to eleviate the force required to cock the rifle should all this be true.

The cocking stroke in regard to the piston travel would be from the full forward position to the distance where the sear engages the piston plus a bit of overtravel to ensure that the sear will engage fully. There are no "stops" to make the rifle less powerful.

Not being familiar with the internals regarding the sear and piston between those models I would be a bit cautious in attempting to fit in a considerably more powerful spring in a 500 due to the possibility of weaker parts used for the sear and piston in the lower powered model.

Bottom line is....if you wanted a Quest 1000 why did you buy a 500?

I'd suggest you take Eddie's advice, do a nice tuning on the rifle and be satisified with smooth performance and some increase in power.

Another crosman quest

by AS (Login jduke05)

i noticed that the crosman quest 500 cocks only a 90 degree angle while the crosman quest 1000 extends quite far past that point. is it possible that there is just a stop on the cocking lever that only lets you cock it a certain distance and that actually still has the main spring not a smaller spring?

if so, how would i extend the cocking lever or if not when i replace the main spring would it still only cock at a 90 degree angle and still get the more power?

The cocking chamber...

by Eddie (Login Adiberts)

of a break barrel can only handle a main spring that is ment for that air gun. A bigger main spring would only cause problems, drag inside the chamber and it might not even cock due the bigger size.

My advice to you is to ask Jim McCarie over e-mail, if he has a main spring that might fit your air gun, that might improve the fps in your air gun.

http://www.airguns.citymax.com/page/page/251327.htm

Like I said, other improvements, are polishing the the main spring and the main spring's post and lubing it with moly paste.

Me I would stay with the orginal main spring and improve it with some tunning and lubing.

Besides my XS B-4-2, my other favorite is my XS b-3, AK style, in .22 cal. I have it with one of those "Shake it flash lights, LED", under the front stock held up by velcro tape sets, for night use with a pellet holder from www.pellet holder.com, that helps for fast loading, plus the velcro straps the pellet holder comes with helps to keep the flash light in place.

Pure fun at night.

In case you wondering, these pellet holders come for all typies of air guns, very handy for fast loading, you can get them at: http://www.pelletholder.com/

Once you have that flash light sighted in with the sights of a XS B-3, AK style, you just can't miss a shot a night.

That is the way too go, added enjoyment.

More details...

by Eddie (Login Adiberts)
Forum Owner

A "Shake it", LED flash light can only be installed on a spring loader that is a side cocker/or CO 2/PCP. It is placed under the the front stock. You will have to use rubber bands at first to sight it in with your sights.

Once you have it sighted in with the rubber bands, mark the place it should go. Then you install it in with "Dupont" velcro tape sets. Just make sure the on/off button of the flash faces downwards to be able to turn it off and on. Once you got this in and the flash light is sighted in with the sight of your side cocker spring gun or CO 2, PCP air gun, then wrap one of those pellet holders for extra holding power for the flash light, also the pellet holder helps to steady the flash light, you can these pellet holders at: http://www.pelletholder.com/

Actually your moving around and the cocking movement needed to charge/load a pellet gives the needed energy the flash needs for working. You will never run out of batteries and these LED bulbs last a life time. Real handy, no hassles.

Forget lasers, forget any other type of night hunting/target shooting, this is the way go. In long ranges, at night, at low fps, you can actually see the back part of the pellet as it travels, which can tell you their flight's path, something like looking at tracer bullet in flight.

Try it you will like it, pure fun at night.

Tuning the B4-2A for Pesting ???

by Frank (Login frankenstrat)

I've tried numerous searches but didn't find the info I'm looking for so I'll ask.. I have B4-2A underlever in .22 cal.. I wanted to tune this up for pesting since using my .223 or .22-250 would be a no no in my area. I have a BAD squirrel and skunk problem darn things are wrecking the place.. Also the Raccoons are nasty as well but I don't want to be shooting at coons with an airgun so I'll stick to the smaller guys.

Anyways, what would be a good spring to install in this thing to bring the velocity up alot? I know it will make the shooting more harsh but like I said, i'm worried about dime size shot groups at long range.. 40 yards maximum is what it will be used for. What are you guys getting out of your B4-2A for chrony readings? Any other mods to do to increase reliability or longevity? I'm not sure how these rifles hold up after modifying them..

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

Do You Have a .22, or .177?

by Andy. (Login WEASELPOPPER)

If you have a .177 XS-B4-2A then you're looking at around a nominal velocity of around 750fps with what you find in the QF-2 kits(spring/seals), If you're shooting a .22 XS-B4-2A, then you're looking at a nominal velocity of 650fps w/ a QF-2 spring change. If you need more power than that, then you're going to do a little more work than just changing the spring, and use something a little better than what you'll find in the QF-2 kit. I have a .177 XS-B4-2A that's currently shooting Beeman Laser's at just over 900fps, mind you that's with a Quest 1000 spring and completely over-hauled internally(honing/polishing/deburring, and finally lubing)You also have to remove the bear-trap to increase your swept air volume, Anyway's I hope this help's, Cheer's, Andy

but my computer has been acting up lately.

Your best bet would be to polish the main spring/it's ends and polish the the main spring's post and lube it with moly paste.

Also a little of "Slick 50" in the piston's chamber will help.

Here is a link to a page I did about some testing I did on the B-4-2A's. http://air_guns.tripod.com/chrony_test_on_3_air_guns.htm

This ammo will ruin your air gun

by bbgunbob (Login bbgunbob)

Gamo PBA ammo is a fluk that will ruin your air rifle or pistol by taking out the rifling in very short order.Besides any one who knows anything about air rifles/pistols knows that any time your pellet breaks the sound barrier you will loose all accuracy.A pellet can not take the shock wave created by breaking the sound barrier it is to light no matter what caliber you use.If you have a air gun that is shooting regular .177 lead pellets at 800fps or better your PBA pellet will pass the the threashold of the sound barrier and your pellet will lose its flight path putting it in a unknown direction.
Every Gamo PBA pellet that passes thru your barrel takes with it a little of your rifling.
After awhile you will end up with a very expensive rifle with a smooth bore barrel that will not be capable of hitting a 3lb. coffee can at 50 feet.
Eddie I can not believe you would even suggest these pellets on a forum(money I guess??).Someone new to to this sport will use these and maybe ruin a new RWS or worst yet a beautiful Wierarch.
DO NOT USE THESE PELLETS IN ANY AIR RIFLE!!
They will turn your new pellet gun to scrap in a very short matter of time.

I am going to let the people on the Yellow Forum and 54 network know of this !!!
I can not believe what a fellow air gunner would recommend these destructive pelletd.I will never return to this forum so what ever you do about this post does not matter to me.You will still be exposed

True enough...

by Eddie (Login Adiberts)
Forum Owner

a pellet that breaks the sound barrier does lose some accuracy on long range shots, this happens to all pellets that break the the sound barrier, they tend to wobble a little in flight.

But, I guess you didn't understand what I was referring to, when I recommended these pellets for extra fps, I talking more about using them from time to time for close range hunting, where more power could be needed, like in that video of a "Pig vs. Gamo", made by Gamo, that is why I posted the video. But then again, it is also a option for some high powered fun target shooting.

I truly doubt that these pellets can ruin a air gun's rifling, since they are gold plated, gold is a lot more softer than steel and although the alloy used in these pellets is lighter than lead, the alloy used is a lot softer than steel. I would not recommend a pellet made of solid steel, since that would ruin a air gun's rifling. I am not sure if the PBA alloy is harder than lead, I will do a test later on.

I also think that Gamo has come up with a good idea, lead pellets do contaminate the environment, this new alloy the PBA pellets are made of, do not contaminate the environment. Making these pellets a good option for outdoor hunting or for that matter any type of outdoor shooting.

This is what this forum is all about, options in air guning, it is your choice, you may use these pellets, you may lube your air gun for extra fps or you may not.

Like I said, it is your choice.

Eddie

I did a test...

by Eddie (Login Adiberts)
Forum Owner

I took a pair of pliers and squeezed a Crosman pointed lead pellet, then I took a Gamo PBA and squeezed it too, with the same amount of strength.

Both pellets (.117 cal.) flatten down to 2 cm.

Judging by this test, I can say that there is no real difference in the hardness of the two metals/alloys.

So, there is no way these Gamo PBA pellets can wear down the rifling in a air gun's barrel faster than lead pellets.

What's more, I think due to the gold plating these PBA pellets have, these pellets should cause less wear than regular pellets and should give some protection (some gold plating on the rifling of a air gun) that should protect the barrel agaisnt lead fouling/rust in the barrel.

Try the plier test for your self.

Sincerely,
Eddie

PBA

by (Login grymmm1234)

Eddie,

I agree with you about choices. I also don't like flaming posters that just toss their opinion out there as the end-all-meet-all. I thought you did quite well with your counter and explanation.

Personally I am not much interested in PBA ammo. I consider it more of a marketing approach (lure the uninformed with high fps as a measure) than of any real use; other than perhaps that it helps the environment a bit. But considering the huge amounts of chemicals, heavy metals, and other contaminants that are belched into the air or pumped into the rivers, lakes, or ground....I don't worry much about my lead pellets.

I see the PBA issue as a choice...and don't think that they are harmful to the barrels. They aren't steel, and don't go THAT much faster in real FPS; just looks cool over the thousand fps mark in my opinion. As far as more "power" I think you said; you and I both know that FPE comes from weight of pellet and speed. PBA pellets are very light; hence their high speed. I doubt that they have the penetration and kinetic energy spread that my much slower but heavier lead pellet provides.

I certainly don't see you as the evil wizard for promoting them lol. That is ridiculous to me.

However, I am deployed to Iraq. That means that until I get home this summer it is all conjecture on my part.

Perhaps you can shoot 'em through a chrony....and see what they REALLY get, then figure the FPE, then shoot lead in a heavy pellet and figure the FPE from that; same gun of course.

You could even shoot a block of wood and measure the depth of penetration....or a steak lol.

All the best,

-Dan

A few months back I did...

by Eddie (Login Adiberts)
Forum Owner

a test with a 1"x5" board of wood, I also posted the test on my forum. I used my old Chinese B-4-2 (about 750 fps using lead pellets), .177 cal. for the test. I shot a lead Crosman pointed pellet at the board from a distance of 10 yards, the lead Crosman pointed pellet went half way thru the board. Then I shot a PBA at the same board, same distance with the same air gun, the PBA pellet went right thru the board. Due to past testing I have done http://air_guns.tripod.com/index.htm, I can say that the fps the PBA pellet did to go thru the board would have to be at least in the 900 fps range.

This test was good enough for me, that is why from time to time I recommend these pellets for close distance hunting or fun outdoor shooting.

Nice meeting you troop.
Take care.
Sincerely,
Eddie

Hold on to your Horse's,,,,

by Anonymous (Login WEASELPOPPER)

What's the matter Bob,,,****ty Day at work??I don't use P.B.A. ammo everyday, for one it's still a little too expensive, and like Eddie said it's a nice change once in a while. I had some Weapon's Tech,. training while I was in the Army, and everything that Eddie said was, and is correct. The Gamo lead/free round has indeed a gold-jacket, which act's as a barrier between the steel rifling, and the lead/free alloy. You could fire these off all day, and do absolutely no damage whatsoever to the steel rifling of your barrel. Try firing off into a soft backstop, and check the rifling mark's left on the spent pellet,The alloy being used is Silver in colour, while the jacket is Gold, so it would be pretty easy to see if the rifling left a score where the Silver could be easily seen. I've yet to see any of the gold coating worn down enough to see silver, or any of the gold "flake" off, even after pancakeing the pellet into steel plate. So, Do a little "R&D" before spoutin' off like that, It's not very Nice.

pba won't ruin your gun

by (Login Casey62)

First of all, I like using PBA Raptor ammo. Second, the next softest metal next to lead is gold. If our friend would take the time to check a few facts before spouting off, oh never mind. Or maybe his gun is so dirty, he can't see the rifling anymore. Anyway, gold is a soft maliable metal and that is why Gamo plates PBA's with it. The only other benefit I see is to give that squirrel a like bling the spit second before he dies. All joking aside, has our friend considered the concept of a R&D department in a large company? If Gamo, one of the top brands in airgunning suddenly put out ammo that stripped the rifling from guns, can you imagine the lawsuits? I think our friend has a problem hitting what he aims at and is looking for an external scapegoat to blame for his own shortcomings. I bet this is a pattern in his life. Don't let his uninformed rants turn you off to a very useful ammo.
In my tests, the flight patterns are flat, which you would expect from a light pellet, but the penetration is impressive. The gun I used for my tests puts out a true 830 fps with lead pellets. In a 1x6 board I can all most go straight through. The backside is splintered, but the pellet remains in the wood. The PBA punched right through, and made a big dent in my backstop. I do clean and lube my guns after each use and the rifling in my rifle is as sharp as ever. So there you go, check my facts, investigate this for yourself, and make up your own mind.

Is that a good thing?

by Bill (Login blklion)

I mean....is penetration all that important?

In regard to target shooting it means little so long as the air gun shoots consistently accurate...you're only punching through paper.

In regard to hunting though penetration isn't the true measure for a successful and clean kill. A pellet that passes through the game animal will transfer less energy into that game animal than one that doesn't pass through.

About your question, I have a page I wrote about Air Gun Juices I have made that includes a special blend for mag. air guns with syn. piston seals. Read it at; http://air_guns.tripod.com/air_gun_juices.htm and use only 2 drops of this blend for syn. piston seals every 1000 shots on your Phantom. This will keep the chamber lubed and prevent rust in the chamber.

"Slick 50", and New "Phantom"

by (Login WEASELPOPPER)

Hey there Eddie, I meant to get back and write a follow-up regarding the Slick50 treatment alot sooner, better late than never. Thank's for the link to your "AirGun Juices" page, I took your recipe, and made a little substitution. I sub'd the Slick50 for Wynn's "MetalOil" treatment, and WOW,,what a difference between the both of them. The MetalOil is 3x as thick, and really adheres to the metal, and doesn't smoke like the Slick50,,,If you get a chance, Try some out, I think you'll be as impressed as I was. So far I've used it in all of my gun's, and as an example,,I put a couple drops in the chamber of my B4.22,,Before the treatment I was lucky to get 550fps w/ Beeman Laser's, and Now! I'm getting between 700-725fps, and that's with well over 500 shot's through it after the treatment. My Phantom is sending lead through 2x4's like butter,LOL, and w/ 9gr. Prometheus round's it's shooting close to 850fps, and accuracy has gone up from Clover Leaves to One-Holer's,,As I said Before Eddie,,You gotta try this stuff out, Cheer's, Andy.

The QB 36, also known as...

by Eddie (Login Adiberts)
Forum Owner

TF 36, is part of the Series of 3, QB-36's, the first one came with a dull finish on the stock and the front part of the stock came with a tapered shape point towards the point of the barrel. The newer model comes with a high gloss finish on the stock, and the front part of the stock has a sharp cut to it, also known as the TF 97. The third model is the magnum QB 39, also known as the QB-99/TF 99 and is much more bigger than the first 2 models.

You might be able to check the differnce in these models at Compasseco's site, at: http://www.compasseco.com , there the QB 36 series goes as Tech Force models. Look up the TF 36, the TF 97 and the TF 99.

If it is the TF99, I guess...

by Eddie (Login Adiberts)

the first thing I would do would be to lube it, since it is a mag. class air gun I guess I would use this mixture on this page I made a while back, check it out at: http://air_guns.tripod.com/lube.htm.

After lubing the air gun, the next thing I would do is to use blue loctite on the screws of the stock to prevent them from coming loose from the double impact of the piston's action.

If I were to use open sights on this air gun, the next thing I would do is the paint the front sight's pin with a white base paint, then I would paint the point of the front sight's pin with a bright (flou.) red paint. Makes it easier/faster to target in a target.

Once all this is done, then I would sight the air gun in.

Hope this helps.

I guess you are...

talking about the ratings/promotion given to this model. The QB-36-2/TF 99 (.177 cal.) is sometimes over rated at over 1000 fps. So I guess you could say that it is the 1100 fps model.

When I say over rated I mean that the promotion given to this model at 1100 fps is due to combustion in the chamber that gives extra fps to the pellet, or using super light Raptor (Gamo) pellets. Once it settles down loses oil combustion in the chamber or when you use regular lead pellets, this model gives about 900 fps.

900 fps is very gun for a air gun at that price.

Beware though, do not create oil combustion in the chamber on purpose in a mag. air gun with a syn. seal, this does a world of hurt to the piston's seal and the main spring.

I have seen/repaired a lot of mag. class springers with broken main springs and piston seals.

Oil combustion in the chamber is ok for springers that have leather piston seals, since the leather piston seal tends to release small amounts of combustion in the chamber, little by little, this is known as good combustion. But mag. class air guns with syn. piston seals tend to combust all of the oil in chamber in a few shots, which cause a world of hurt to the piston seal and can even break the main spring in two pieces. For this reason I recommended you a non combustion lube mixture.

But if you want extra fps, buy some super light Gamo Raptor pellets. They are not too accurate at long range according to most shooters, but very impressive at close range (under 100 ft.).

Pig v s. pellet air gun...

I am posting a very impressive video using those Gamo Raptor pellets, also known as PBA's. Check it out. The air gun used here is a mag. class Gamo air gun, rated at 1100 fps, but using these PBA pellets, this model gives 1500 fps. Good enough to hunt down a wild pig with a head shot.

I was a kid, not much power to that pistol, very un-accurate due to the short barrel. About how to take out that spring, although I never disassemable one, I guess since you took out the screws and the spring still hangs on, it must have a push pin some where that holds it in place.

Carefully exam the pistol, somewhere it should have a pin or something like that, that is holding that spring on.

Back...I think....

by Bill (Login blklion)

On top of all the other stuff going on in my life I've suffered through a couple of computer crashes...one massive one due to a lightning strike. I had to rape three other computers to get this one back into operation but, unfortunately, I also lost all data accumulated over the years. All pics, diagrams, specs, shooting data and such are long gone as was my airgun inventory which I'll have to redo....not a task I'm looking forward to.

Anyway, system is finally up and running to where I feel confident it isn't going to require another reinstall of the operating system.

Oh yeah, lost all the email addresses as well which is why no one has heard from me. Rude awakening when you realize how much you rely on such a fragile filing system.

we really missed you. Sorry to hear what happened with your computer, losing all your work. Yes, I know what you are talking about, I have lost a lot of work over the years. I have gone thru about 6 computers over the years, even lost one due to lightning hitting a cable line to my cable service last year.

You know Bill, you should buy one of those "Travel Drives", they are fairly cheap nowadays, a 1 gb unit only costs about $50.oo nowadays and you can back up all your work easily, real easy to use. The only thing your computer has to have to use these units is a USB socket. They are about the size of a small butane lighter.

That is what I use nowadays, real handy, you can store just about anything in them and take them anywhere and use them/your work in any other computer that has a USB socket.

Nice hearing from you again.

the Gamo Whisper, the company claims that it reduces noise about 50%. You could look up some reviews about this product. Here is one review about that product; http://www.pyramydair.com/blog/2007/10/testing-gamo-whisper.html

Actually most commercial products that looks like a noise dampener is nothing more than a handle for cocking, does not really dampen the noise on air guns. But then again this product is new, so I really don't know.

You could try something I did with a Qb 78 CO2 model, I made a noise damper for this model out of a empty CO2 bottle, check it out at my site at: http://air_guns.tripod.com/qb78.htm It did dampen the noise on this CO2.

You could make something like that to dampen the noise on your air gun.

I hope this helps.

Slavia 622

air guns back in 1965 and I think they were made in the Czech Republic. So getting parts for this model might be hard. If it is a basic seal replacement repair and lube job, you could ask Jim McCarrie to see if he has seals that will fit this model, just write him by e-mail to see what he has that will fit that model at: http://www.airguns.citymax.com/page/page/251327.htm

There is a site that does repair jobs on old models, but I lost the URL when I formatted my hard disk.

I also live in Puerto Rico, write me by e-mail to give you my phone number to see what type of repair you want done on this model at: ericferrer@hotmail.com

I think I have a leather piston seal that might fit that model and maybe a main spring that might fit it.

Backyard experiment Results

by Aaron G (Login Shadow1000PBA)

Objective: Penetrate and destroy a pair of ANSI Z87 rated safety glasses using two different types of air riffle ammo.

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment): Heavy leather jacket, Safety glasses (not the ones used as the target!), long denim pants, and leather boots.

Target: Old & Bulky pair of ANSI Z87 rated safety glasses.

Gun: Gamo Shadow 1000,

Ammo: Gamo PBA, Crosman (Copper Head) Hunter Lead

FPS: 1250 w/PBA and 1000 with Lead.

Range/Environment: 15 ft into my wifes Shoe closet. NOT RECOMENDED! I needed the closet to retrieve the Pellets.

Result: The PBA offers deeper penetration while the Hunter lead offers greater expansion. There's a reason OSHA refers to them as safety glasses. PBA and Hunter lead both failed to penetrate the target. However the experiment did give me a warm fuzzy about the Glasses I wore durring. My next attempt will be w/ my Mossberg 12 w/ 00 Buck, and no, not in the shoe closet.

Tech Notes: I used a digital Caliper to measure the width of expansion and depth of the penetrations. PBA W= 4.57mm D= 4.38mm , Crosman Hunter Lead W= 5.29mm D= 4.24mm
Difference W= 0.72mm D= 0.14mm

Safety Notes: ALLWAYS USE THE PROPER PPE WHEN HANDELING A GUN OF ANY KIND! DO NOT TELL MY WIFE BOUT THE SHOE CLOSET! DO NOT USE YOUR WIFES SHOE CLOSET AS A TARGET RANGE!! I did it so you don't have to.

Enjoy,
Aaron

Testing with Gamo PBA and Stuff

by Aaron G (Login Shadow1000PBA)

Hey Eddie
Have you used the Gamo PBA in your testing, and If so what were the results. I've have a Gamo Shadow 1000 with a red dot scope that I bought back in '02 when I was stationed in WA. I have other firearms, butt the greatest thing I've come to love about using a High Powered air riffle is the high perfomance and cheap ammo. My next question is about suggestions on ammo other than PBA. What do you suggest for better accuracy and penetration, ie crossman, gamo, daisy? I also need a little help figuring out how I should properly lube my gun w/out making a complete FUBAR out of it. I lost the Manuf's Req's on Cleaning and Care the first day I bought it.

Ty for your Time,
A.G.

P.S. Until I found your site I had no idea that my gun had a pellet holder in the butt. Nice find Eddie!

Yes I have...

by Eddie (Login Adiberts)
Forum Owner

I took a old springer I have, a Chinese XS B-4-1, .177 cal. (about 750 fps) at 5 yards I shot at a 1" inch board of wood with one of my favorite pellets a Crosman Pointed Pellet, it went in about 1/2" into the wood. Then I tested a PBA with the same air gun and the results amazed me, the pellet went right thru the board. In other words the FPS went up to about 150 fps on this air gun, put this air gun in a mag. class among air guns in that cal..

The Gamo PBA does give advantages at close range, but due to their light wieght they are not very accurate at long distances, over 100 ft..

On Youtube you can see the results of these pellets at: http://youtube.com/results?search_query=gamo+pba&search=Search

They have this video of a 180 lb. pig hunted down with a Gamo mag. class air gun, the "Gamo 1200" and a PBA pellet, it is called "Pig vs. a Pellet Gun", very impressive.

Actually over the years I have found that the Crosman Pointed Pellets gives the best results in just about all air guns, good accuracy at close range and long range, but I am very impressed with the results of the new PBA at close range.

About lubing your air gun, since it is a Gamo Shadow 1000, it is a mag. class air gun, needs very little lubing, over lubing it can damage it. Good choice. I have tried that air gun and I liked it. About lubing it, use Crosman's lube for air guns and lube all povit points and the trigger block about every 500 shots and lube the chamber about every 1000 shots with 2 drops only, to aviod rust from forming in the pressure chamber. Of course, every time you use it, wipe it down and give it a coat of oil to perserve the blueing on the metal.

I hope this helps.

Eddie

For $250.00 you have a world of choices in Springers. PCP does not give you many choices. If I were you I would start off with a good springer, check out all the choices you have here at: http://astore.amazon.com/airguninforma-20?%5Fencoding=UTF8&node=211
The Chinese B-4-2, in .22 cal is a good starter air gun, Gamo and RWS make great air guns with good warrantys.

In PCP and pumpers, very little lube is used, actually lubing in these air guns can damage them.

My advice is start off with a good springer, less problems, more action.

I hope this helps.

B4-2 Spring Help

by (Login a0003995)

I recently purchased a B4-2 in .22 cal. I plan on doing all the usual modifications. Can anyone recommend a spring that will give this gun some added knock down power.

John

The best way to...

give a B-4-2 extra power is changing the syn. piston seal for a leather one. The main spring the B-4-2 comes with is made for that air gun, changing the main spring to a bigger one will only cause drag in the power plant, results less fps/power.

Changing the syn. piston seal to a leather one with give you extra power due to small amounts of combustion from lubing, this is known as good combustion (Cardew's studies). The leather piston seal releases small amounts of combustion from lube that boosts power in the chamber. Of course to keep consistency up, the air gun must be lubed often, about 2 drops of Slick 50 every 50 to 100 shots.

The new B-4-2 comes with a screw on cup on the piston for the syn. piston seal. If you take this off, you can screw in a leather piston seal. You might be able to get a leather piston seal for the B-4-2 from Mr. John Ye at: xisico_usa@yahoo.com Write him and ask him if he has them on stock and how much it will cost with shipping and handling.

In the past, the B-4 came with a leather piston seal, the newer models with the Monte Carlo's type stock come with a syn. piston seal. So, Mr. John Ye, might still have some of these leather piston seals on stock.

Of course polishing the main spring and it's guide helps, also lubing the mainspring/guide with moly paste helps. Also scoring the chamber helps too. When I say scoring the chamber, I mean using 80 grit sand paper to create grooves in the chamber to reduce friction in the piston's chamber, not sanding it down, just a enough to create grooves/scratches inside/around the piston's chamber. Take in mind though, some chambers already have these grooves, that is why some air guns are more powerful than others, even though they may be the same model/brand. Springers that come with prefectly smooth piston chambers tend to be less powerful, too much drag on the piston's seal. So, inspect the chamber to see if it needs scoring.

But if you want extra power, about 80 to 100 fps more, the way to go is to change the syn. piston seal for a leather one.
