Montreal Shooters Parents Say They Knew Nothing Until Told By Police

Montreal, Quebec (AHN) - Parvinder Sandhu sits in the living room of her brick bungalow in the quiet north Montreal suburb of Laval and sobs softly as she tells of her son, Kimveer Gill, the man whom police say was responsible for the Columbine like shootings at Dawson College on Wednesday.

Her husband, who asks that his name not be used, is in the kitchen, busy on the phone making funeral arraignments for their son.

"My husband cried all night and said "If I only knew. If only I knew," according to an interview with La Presse.

Gill's father would not talk to reporters, but his mother provided details into the family reaction to the event and some insight into her son.

She said that on Wednesday she and her husband were glued to the television watching the Dawson College events with horror, not having any idea their son was involved.

She said they were "crushed and blown away," when police came to their door to notify them and to search the house.

The mother of the perpetrator of the mass shootings would not let reporters into the bedroom of Kimveer, where he kept his computer where he posted his rantings and the guns he prized and which he used to kill 20 year old Anastasia De Sousa and wound about 19 others.

She insists her son was not the twisted solitary person portrayed in the media.

"He had friends and everything," she said, but added, "He had changed lately. "

"Since Christmas, he had become more sad, more tranquil, he started to spend more time on his computer playing video games," she explained.

She said her own illness, which she did not describe, led her son to become depressed and he was treated at a local health clinic.

The Gill's were aware of their son's gun collection. Kimveer proudly showed them the Beretta rifle which he later used in the shootings. She also said he was a member of a gun club in nearby Lachine.

Membership in the gun club may explain how he was able to obtain the handgun. Under Canadian law long guns, such as rifles and shotguns are legal to register and own, but ownership of a pistol requires membership in a recognized gun club. By law, the pistol may only be taken from the owners home directly to the gun club shooting range on an approved route.

Kimveer did a four-week stint of basic training in the Canadian Firces in 1999 where his mother said she believes he first discovered his liking for guns.

Canadian Forces officials say he did not use firearms during his brief association with them. They say firearms training come later in the basic course. They would not give a reason for his leaving the forces after so short a time.

Gill's parents say they now know their son hid many things from them. They were anguished to see pictures of him as an avenging angel on his violent goth website.

"Seeing these pictures I ask myself how a good boy could become like this. I never knew he had this website. Perhaps it influenced him," she said.

"If he had lived I would insist they give him the maximum penalty," she sobbed. "No one deserves what happened. I feel terrible when I see the other parents suffering."
