Response to Gatto is at it again!

I had not considered the possible connection between school lifestyles and prison lifestyles. Hmmm.... you've got your honors track and your business track and your prison track...
SOmething I read yesterday really got me thinking about good and bad "socialization" - the mom said that she thought getting her very social child away from places where there was so much socialization (school) was a good thing.
Don't know if it was her point or not, but it made me realize how totally nonproductive and passive the "social" times are at school (recognizing htat people usually consider there to be more to "socialization" than this, of course). Lots of class time is spent being "alone in a crowd" -- sitting at your desk listening or writing or whatever. Even in settings where a teacher does more "cooperative learning" or "child-centered" learning, it's generally very teacher-driven.
And as students get older, instead of being expected to do more with each other with more independence, I suspect if you surveyed schools, the students would be doing far more teacher-driven work. The "social" time is spent "hanging out." Students getting together to do things are considered a threat.
