I am prayerfully considering homeschooling my nephew whom I am legal guardian of. I am not new to homeschooling I have homeschooled my 14 and 12 year old children for the past 6 years. It has become increasingly difficult to maintain order since acquiring custody of my 6 year old nephew. He was in preschool when he came to us. It has been one battle after another with the district. I feel manipulated, lied to, exhausted, and was about to give in to their demands when I realized I am the only advocate this child has. I rejoice in his differences yet I'm not sure I can take on the responsibility of educating a special needs child. How will I know what he needs? What kinds of support networks are there?

I'm not exactly sure what you are asking. Maybe if you could be more specific on what his problems are. Are you looking for support on the net or the local community? Don't let the local school push you around, find out what your state laws are concerning the situation. I know I haven't been of much help but hopefully it will get ya started on the best path for you and your family. And keep coming back the folks here are a fountain of information!

You can do this. It will be some work but you will see more results than all the work you are putting into fighting the school to get them to do what is right. Do you know your child's diagnosis? What level is he working at? Don't take the school's word about it but where do you think he is? Please write back.
Peace, Nedra
