The following was mailed to me by PNH - I've been included in the
return mail since I sent a very similar mail to her regarding the
Orbit newsletter I posted simultaneously with Simon Cullen (I'm one of
the "everyone else who's asked").
Apologies if this has already been posted, I've haven't seen it, but
with propagation delays it could already have been discussed to death!

Dear Michael Mackert (and everyone else who's asked):
Yes, you're right. I was confused (a.k.a. "wrong"). This is what I get
for
going on vacation.
First and most important: Yes, that plot description is real.
Second, in case anyone's wondering: We aren't Orbit. They aren't even
corporate cousins. They're a separate outfit. It's just that they're
Robert
Jordan's UK publishers.
Here's what happened: I received a letter from Simon Geard asking
about a
description of the plot of Robert Jordan's next novel, which he said
he'd
gotten from a Wheel of Time fanzine. I was puzzled; how could it be
that
we'd released that information in some form, but nobody had talked to
me
about putting it up on the website? That seemed odd. On the other
hand, I'd
recently been away on vacation. Maybe whatever-it-was had happened
while I
was gone.
(Patrick says I should point out here that neither he nor I work
directly on
Robert Jordan's books. Patrick's the overall head of Tor's SF and
Fantasy
lines, I'm a Consulting Editor, and we both run the main Tor website.
But we
don't handle the day-to-day tasks on those books, so we don't
necessarily
know everything the instant it happens. We're only mildly omniscient.)
Back to the story. I checked with different people and departments at
Tor,
asking them the same question Simon Geard had asked me: Had we
recently
released any plot descriptions, or other information of similar sort,
concerning the next Robert Jordan novel? In every instance, they said
they
hadn't heard of any such thing happening. At that point I figured it
was an
answered question, and wrote back to Simon Geard to say that plot
description was none of our doing.
Oh, well. At least I told him it was "an ingenious piece of
invention",
which it certainly would have been if one of Jordan's fans had made it
up
from scratch. It didn't seem completely implausible; they're an
ingenious
lot.
In retrospect, it was the phrasing of the question that caused the
confusion. This is absolutely not Simon Geard's fault; but if he'd
asked me,
or if I'd asked those other people at Tor, whether we'd issued our new
catalog for the Fall 2000 season, or whether we now have printed
dustjackets
for =Winter's Heart= complete with flap copy, I'd of course have told
him
yes, certainly, right on schedule, I've got one right here. (My guess
is
that Orbit has copies too.)
Think of it as a case of searching for a document under the wrong
filename.
Anyway, I do have the text in question right here, and yes, we
published it.
The person who wrote it can only have been Harriet McDougal (who is
undeniably a fan of Robert Jordan, and is very ingenious indeed). Does
that
make it official? Sure does. And I'm truly sorry if I've inadvertently
caused any confusion or alarm.
Just to set things straight, you'll find the text of our dustjacket
(or at
least the current version of it) reproduced below. Any words in
brackets or
carets don't actually appear on the cover. And because someone's sure
to
ask: no, this does NOT mean we have finished books.
Cheers --
Teresa Nielsen Hayden

WINTER'S HEART
Millions of Robert Jordan fans will rejoice at the
release of the ninth book in the phenomenally success-
ful bestselling series The Wheel of Time. The sequel to
the #1 New York Times bestseller The Path of Daggers,
which swept the nation like a firestorm, Winter's Heart
continues the remarkable tale that is mesmerizing an
entire generation of readers.
Rand is on the run with Min, and in Cairhien, Cad-
suane is trying to figure out where he is headed. Rand's
destination is, in fact, one she has never considered.
Mazrim Taim, leader of the Black Tower, is revealed
to be a liar. But what is he up to?
Faile, with the Aiel Maidens, Bain and Chiad, and her
other companions, Queen Alliandre and Morgase, is a
prisoner of Sevanna's sept.
Perrin is hunting desperately for Faile. With Elyas
Machera, Berelain, the Prophet, and a very mixed "army"
of disparate forces, he is moving through country rife
with bandits and roving Seanchan...and in the wolfdream
the man called Slayer seems to be hunting Perrin. In
addition, the Forsaken are ever more present.
In Tar Valon, the schemers and counter-schemers in
Elaida's White Tower are

shaken to the core when Egwene and the rebels appear
suddenly outside the walls.
In Ebou Dar, the Seanchan princess known as Daughter of
the Nine Moons arrives--and Mat, who has been recuperating
in the Tarasin Palace, is introduced to her. Will the
marriage that has been foretold come about?
There are neither beginnings nor endings to the turning
of the Wheel of Time. But it is a beginning...
