when I was younger my mother would make some type of candy out of mashed potatoes. she would roll them in colored sugar, or place a half of a pecan in the middle. They had to placed in the fridge all the time. But all the reciepes I have found has peanut butter, or coconut or something in them and dipped in chocolate. but my mother's didn't. Can you please help me I have tried to find this for Christmas
the last 10 years.
Make Hot Browns, they are like an open face sandwhich, toast as many slices of white bread as you need. Place toast in shallow baking pan, lay turkey pieces on top. Cook 1-2 slices of bacon for each and lay on top of turkey. Make a white sauce receipe (found on most boxes of cornstarch) pour over the top of each "sandwich" then grate mild cheddar cheese over the top of each one. Put in the oven at 325 about 15-20 minutes.
have a receipe book for the old time receipes like our grandmothers use to cook, I'm talking about when they all cooked with lard and hardly ever measured anything. All my cookbooks have is for cake go start with box mix then add other items. I always wanted an old time cookbook.
YOu should try to locate the cook books that churches have published, I have 3 or 4 that are very old but in great shape. My grandmother even has one in one of them for apricot nectar cake, you talk about something that makes your tongue slap your brains out! HmMMM good!
I have bought from alot of churchs and they are all modern kind. even down to the Old Regular Baptist one. So you keep yours they are rare to come by. I would love to just look at some of those books. Do they have one for gingerbread in it.
I am sitting here with one of the old cookbooks in hand....you should email me..we may know each other.
there is a recipe for gingerbread..one of a few actually.

This book was compiled in 1934 by Gleaners Class of the First Christian Church of Pikeville
the recipe was submitted by:
Mrs Walter Reynolds
for him. He wants it cut into big chunks (the cabbage), corned beef the same way and simmer in a big can of chicken broth until the cabbage is cooked until your liking. He likes his still firm. It doesn't take too long at all.
You don't have many to cook for or have anything else to do. Us little old ladies do have lives of other interest like eating out now and then. Give us a break
I get tired of the same thing over and over. And as you very well know, Pike County is pretty limited.....especially Elkhorn. Good thing they have to have their daily fix of Pikeville though. LOL
My Dad went Christmas Day (6 a.m.) to Wal-Mart to walk only to find out they were closed. I told him if he had stopped just for a minute and thought, he would have known they would be closed. He said he knew that, but wanted to make sure....like he doesn't know what a telephone is for! I think he's just a roadaholic! LOL
Hey..reckon anyone out there has a recipe that they
by ccg
could incorporate to use up all my left-over ham, turkey/dressing/gravy/,pumpkin pie, cheesecake egg-nog and punch...hmmmm...that would make for a "hellacious" casserole..lol
TIRED OF COOKING BY NOW BUT DON'T STOP LETTING US KNOW OF SOME GOOD RECEIPES. I ALWAYS GET TIRED OF THE SAME OLD THINGS TO COOK.WISHING ALL A HAPPY NEW YEAR
The reason we all celebrate the New Year with such joyous abandon is because we SURVIVED another Christmas.
WHEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think it's time to go to bed now...wake me up on the 28th.
HAPPY BDAY WAVER!!!!
(oh and just for everyones info...The only birthday you really have is on the day of your birth. The rest of them are anniversaries of that day.
SO HAPPY ANNIVERSARY WAVER!!
This recipe was given to me by Mavis Baker, cook at DCSO - she has been making them over 35 years - they are easy to make and are extremely tasty! Hope you all enjoy them!
2 eggs
1 cup white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup real butter (melted)
1 tsp. vanilla flavoring
about the same as Thanksgiving only with more goodies. I'm hoping this year my Mother will agree to ham biscuits and snacks. My brothers all scamper to other places as well.
You can't eat just one of these its so funny I was eating one reading this message.
FILLING; 3/4 CUP PEANUT BUTTER
3/4 CUP CONFECTIONER SUGAR
1 TBS MELTED BUTTER
MIX ALL THIS FILLING TOGETHER THEN PRESS INTO A 9BY 13 PAN, I USE CARMEL WRAPS INSTEAD OF CARMELS THEY WORK BETTER BUT IF YOU CANT FIND WRAPS MELTS CARMELS WITH I TBS WATER IN MICRO SPREAD OR LAY THE CARMEL WRAPS ON THE FILLING MIXTURE. THEN LET THEM COOL IN FREEZER THEN GET THEM OUT AND CUT THEM AND DIP THEM IN CHOCOLATE. I USE I BAG CHOCOLATE OR 1 LARGE CHOCOLATE BAR PER HALF BAR OF WAX LET ME KNOW HOW YOU LIKE THEM IF THEY START TO GET WARM BEFORE YOU FINISH DIPPING PUT BACK IN FREEZER A FEW MINUTES WE LOVE THEM ENJOY
I was like "how is this supposed to fill this pan"...I used the wraps that I use for apples...that is what you meant wasn't it? They are good but I would reallllllllyy....like a real "High Noon" candy bar for Christmas...and Gerri says she don't remember what they are...hmmmm....she ain't that young is she??????
High Noon Come on girl now you're making us look real old. The closest thing to one I've found is the top part of those new candy bars that hershey has out or what are they called i can't remember it has a cookie bottom but a high noon top or shucks if i remember the name I will tell you don't that just tick you off and I eat them alot.
Ok I'll excuse you if you don't like something you probably didn't eat them therefore you probably don't remember them. But I'm a complusive eater when it comes to peanut butter in anything. In between my trips to the drs I've been up late at nights but I finally got my smoothie's, fudge, 5th ave, mounds, Highnoons, coconut bars, peanut butter balls, cherries, gingerbread, rock cookies, and beef balls made. I love making this stuff. I fix my neighbors up baskets with this year they got homemade candies and homemade apple butter, last year it was strawberry jam. I try to make something each year I also made some of them homemade salsa. Hey we're not doing too bad so far for Jan 2003 We've got 5 drs appts so far so you seen theres no end. Please remember me in prayer i need it.

4 cups sugar
3 cups brown sugar
2 cups molasses
2 cup lard
4 eggs
2 tbs cinnamon
4 cups buttermilk
2small boxes ginger if you dont like it hot add less
this is self rising flour if don't use it add 2 tbs soda or baking powder
3 cups sugar
1 stick butter
2 milk
1 large bag marshmellows
boil first three unitl forms soft ball stage then add around 30 large marshmellows let them melt add two packs crushed fine granham crackers stir until coated with one 14oz size of coconut. stir mix and pour in greased 9x13 pan until set if it still looks alittle white add more crushed crackers before pouring into pan.
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup cocoa
1 cup milk
4 tbsp butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Combine sugar, cocoa and milk in a saucepan. Stir to blend, then bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Turn to a simmer and do not stir again.
Place candy therometer in pan and cook until temperature reaches 238 degrees. If you are not using a thermometer, then cook until a drop of this mixture in a cup of cold water forms a soft ball. Feel with your fingers to make sure it is the right consistency.
Remove from heat, add butter and vanilla extract. Beat with a wooden spoon until the fudge loses its sheen. DO NOT UNDERBEAT.
Pour into a greased (with butter or margarine) 8" x 8" pan and let cool. Cout into 1" squares.
Makes about 60 squares.
You will need a candy thermometer for best results.
3 eggs, beaten
1 cup light corn syrup
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
2 tbsp margarine, melted
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups pecans, chopped
1 9" pie crust, unbaked
In a large bowl, mix eggs, corn syrup, sugar, chocolate chips, margarine and vanilla until well blended. Blend in the pecans.
Pour into 9" unbaked pie shell. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 - 60 minutes or until knife inserted halfway between center and edge comes out clean. Cool on wire rack
Do any of you have a recipe for gingerbread, the old fashioned kind, the ones that are formed like fixing biscuits. You know when we used to use a cream can with the bottom cut away to cut the pats of gingerbread. I know they have biscuit cutters now.
I miss that kind of gingerbread, all they have now days is like making a cake. Don't look the same and surely don't taste the same.
Hey I was messing around trying to get the static out of my hair and I took a dryer fabric softner sheet ran it through my hair and it works then this lady told me to run in over your clothes if you smoke and it helps with the cig smell especially if you have an appt. etc.
The traditional ham or turkey for Christmas or duck? I guess I'm just burned out on food, (you'd never believe this by looking at me though) but I eat the wrong kinds. Just wondering if anyone is fixing anything besides these two or three traditions.
I'm gonna try to talk Mother into just having snacks on Christmas Day. My 3 brothers always have 2 or 3 different dinners to go to and are in and out. Ham biscuits, sausage balls, (etc.) and desserts sounds good enough to me.
Going to convince your dear mother to do that. Now Gerri you and I both know they don't like to break traditions especially at holidays my mother is the same way I'd love to be able to do that but she does that on Christmas Eve but it would be a royal sin to do that on Christmas Day according to her not me. Good Luck with your Mom
Is for you Gerri I'm so messed up this week and its only the beginning got to travel tomorrow to lex to dr with hubby so I'm starting a good week again. I don't have enough hours in a day
Tequila Balls....actually they're called Margarita Balls....
by Gerri
1 12oz. box vanilla wafers, crushed
1/2 lb. ground blanched almons
1 1oz. squares white chocolate, melted as directed on pkg.
Process until smooth in blender:
1/2 cup orange marmalade
2 Tbsp. lime juice
1/4 cup tequila
1 Tbsp. light corn syrup
Stir marmalade mixture with melted chocolate. Add to crumb mixture. Shape in 1 inch balls and coat with granualted sugar (white or colored). Store in refrigerator. Makes appx. 4 dozen.
These have a better flavor if you let them set overnight. They usually don't last that long around here though.
If you will keep your hands dampened while shaping into balls, the mixture won't stick to your hands as bad.
and sooooooo easy to make. Like I said, they're better if they sit over night before eating. But, they are usually gone before I get a chance to refrigerate them.......if people know what I'm making.

wore me out...anybody got any suggestions/good recipes?? I am seriously thing about just making steak/baked potato/salad for Christmas - sort of "untraditional" but I have a friend whose Mom does seafood for their family get-together..I think I over-cooked or cooked-out at T/giving...lol
I need a receipe for good old chocolate fudge the kind your boil on the stove. I once knew this lady that use to make it and it would melt in your mouth it was so creamy. How can I get it this way. Does anyone want to share a fudge receipe no marshmellow kind please the boil kind.
3 cups white sugar
2/3 cup HERSHEY'S ® Cocoa Powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups milk
1/4 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions
1 Line 8-or 9-inch square pan with foil, extending foil over edges of pan. Butter foil.
2 Mix sugar, cocoa and salt in heavy 4-quart saucepan; stir in milk. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture comes to full rolling boil. Boil, without stirring, until mixture reaches 234 degrees F on candy thermometer or until small amount of mixture dropped into very cold water, forms a soft ball which flattens when removed from water. (Bulb of candy thermometer should not rest on bottom of saucepan.)
3 Remove from heat. Add butter and vanilla. DO NOT STIR. Cool at room temperature to 110 degrees F (lukewarm). Beat with wooden spoon until fudge thickens and just begins to lose some of its gloss. Quickly spread into prepared pan; cool completely. Cut into squares. Store in tightly covered container at room temperature.
and to answer WAVER's question......I personally don't eat many sweets (takes me 2 days to eat a regular little Reese's cup). My family likes the p-nut butter fudge.
That's my problem its a candy bar, coke and a cig every morning for breakfast and you wonder why I need a diet program. I couldn't make it through the day without some kind of candy. I hate pies, cakes, etc. Just good old candy
a BIG Salem Slim Lights 100's and a tall insulated glass of ice water.
I had to quit my go-go juice (coffee) a couple years ago because of stomach problems.
I quit MOST of the sweets about 20 years ago when my now husband told me (not long after we started dating as a matter of fact) that my hinny was getting broad. That ended my addiction to Pepsi and Reese's cups right then and there. I wanted him more than the candy and pop.
I can still put a piece of strawberry pie and a piece of stack cake away in a days time though.
This is mine hope you like this one I can't keep them they eat them as fast as I make them here. If you leave them sit out of fridge and air tight container the center will get liquid. My crew want let them sit long enough. Enjoy the receipe.
* 3 10 oz. cans of maschino (or maraschino) cherries with
stems
* 3 tablespoons margarine
* 3 tablespoons light corn syrup
* 2 cups sifted powdered sugar
* 1 pound dark vegan chocolate
Directions:
1. Drain cherries thoroughly on paper towels for several hours.
Line a baking sheet with waxed paper; set aside.
2. In a bowl combine margarine and corn syrup. Stir in powdered
sugar; knead until smooth. Chill. Shape 1/2 teaspoon of mixture
around each cherry. Place them, stem side down, on the baking
sheet. Chill for no longer than one hour.
3. Melt chocolate in a double boiler. Line a baking sheet with
waxed paper. Holding cherries by the stem, dip them in the
chocolate. Be sure to completely seal cherries in the coating
to prevent leaking. Place cherries, stem side down, on the
baking sheet.
4. Chill until firm. Store in a tightly covered container in
the fridge. Leave them for 1 to 2 weeks to allow the filling to
liquefy. Enjoy.
CAN SOMEONE TELL ME HOW MUCH WAX OR WHAT DO I USE TO MELT IN A BAG OF CHOCOLATE CHIPS FOR DIPPING CANDY. I'VE HEARD OIL THEN WAX CAN SOMEONE GIVE ME THIS RECEIPE. THANKS
guessing way...melt the chocolate chips in a double-boiler pan set or (a large pan full of hot water sorta simmering on the stove - take the smaller pan and put your chips in it - set it down in the water that is boiling/simmering and they should start to melt - wire wisk is a good way to un-lump them)...the parafin wax you put in the chocolate will melt down and the chocolate will sorta lose it's glossy look and be dull - that is when you know it is good for dippin'..now..as to how much wax to put in the chocolate - when the chocolate loses it glossiness I stop with the parafin wax...if you let the wax cool it will start to solidify..so dip that candy...FAST...good luck...
that's the way I always do it but I thought maybe I was using too much wax. I never know how much to put pure bag . I will give that a try but I use the water kettle method also.
I use the way you guys do. Hey ccg do you think Gerri is still feeding her crew we haven't heard from her today. We had a nice one ate too much as usual but hey only comes once a year, (but I eat that way all year) that's my problem
she fixed every one of her family member's favorite recipes/foods..and she doesn't have any "little" family, either! She had that red truck full of groceries..do you realize that much food could feed a small country for several days??? I would say ole' Haysi Gal is laying around taking it easy (if she has even got up today)..oh, but she has a great idea for left-overs..you send all those favorite dishes (left-overs) home with the designated person it was made for..ain't she so nice?? I think at Christmas we should all forego cooking and just label ourselves as "Rowe's" or "Fleming's" and go on over to her house...tehehe....
I've been cleaning up all day with a broken back and killer headache....at a slow pace I might add. I did 3 loads last night in the dishwasher and 2 today. That didn't get alot of the cookware. I wash my good stainless by hand.....and dry it as soon as it's rinsed in steaming hot water (helps it to dry quicker).
I layed down on the couch and took a nap this evening and feel some better.
I got everything done except the homemade marshmallows! It takes a while for them....and I just didn't have the time.
Everyone had a good time and plenty to eat. My Grandmother was getting worried when Daddy said he didn't know if he could make it to the couch or not....She told him it was about time he had quit. She was afraid all the dessert would be gone before she could hold any. I laughed and told her there was plenty. She told me what to get out for her. I did and set it back so she was assured of what she wanted. LOL She's 92 and a sweetheart but still wants her way!
2 tsp. of sweet herbs (1/2 tsp. each marjoram, savory, thyme, either poultry seasoning or sage)
2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
Add just before using:
3/4 c. milk
1/3 c. chopped fresh celery
1/3 c. chopped fresh onion
2 qts. bread crumbs
Grind the dried herbs together and allow to stand in warm butter about 15 minutes. Add salt and pepper and lightly toss the seasoned mixture and 2 quarts bread crumbs.
Just before using, add the last 3 ingredients (milk, celery and onion). Stuff the bird lightly and put in the oven at once. The above quantities are enough for a 8-10 lb. fowl. Also excellent with pork or fish.
This is from a friend of mine in Ontario, Canada that loves good food!
I'm sorta the lazy type when it comes to that....I use Stove Top. I only have 2 in my family that eat it.
I make for the Holidays if anyone is interested in any of them let me now I'll get it on here for you.

This message is for Waver. Please email me the recipe for Hi Noon candy bars. My dad used to bring us kids this candy as a treat and I would love to surprise my siblings with a gift of this candy bar.
i remember a candy bar called high noon when i was a kid. i dont remember the company that made it, but i have often had a craving for this candy bar. can you help? thanks
If you find any information on how you can get any of these candy bars will you please let me know. I came across this website by accident looking to see if I could still buy them. I was born in Pikeville Hospital about 49 years ago, my family is from Elkhorn City. Anyone else out there from Elkhorn please email sometime.
Hi, I live in Northern Ireland and over here we are unfortunatly unable to get anything like the peanut butter balls as you have on your receipe list. I was just hoping that you would prehaps email me the receipe.
It would be very much appreciated by myself as i am a hugh peanut butter lover.
I love yeast bread of any type but I can't seem to get my yeast right its either not right temp and don't rise or too hot. Is there an easier way to make sure I get it right temp?
make sure your yeast had a fresh date on it? I always set my dough out in room temperature and cover it. I let it sit over night.....punch it down and let it rise again before baking.
was make the boxed mixes. They were good. The "homemade" crusts were always too hard, but the inside was good. Evidently, I'm doing something wrong and need to use it a little more often and try different things.
"Working Woman's Rolls"....(I highly recommend these for taste/easy to fix)
by ccg
1 pkg. dry yeast
2 cups warm water
3/4 cup Crisco
1/4 cup sugar
1 egg
4 cups self-rising flour
Dissolve yeast in water - set aside. Cut Crsico into flour with fork. Add sugar and egg - mix well. Spoon into well greased muffin pan. Bake at 450 (pre-heated oven) for 15-20 minutes. May keep 2 weeks in refrigerator.
A bit like mine sans the crisco I use melted margarine
by DM
however they do have to rise...and you will not guess where I let mine rise..On the clothes dryer. Its always going and its nice a just the right temp.
Spray a little PAM on plastic wrap to cover and toss that laundry in the dryer.
Hey we all have our ways. LOL
guess I will have all the old "favorites"..turkey/dressing/gravy, ham (for those who don't want turkey - mainly Bob - he says he "hates" turkey but if that is all I fixed he would "pig-out"..ain't that just like a man)....broccoli casserole, prolly green beans, too..sweet potatoe casserole or mashed potatoes and really haven't decided which one..."Working Woman's Rolls" (one of the best roll recipes I have ever come across - compliments of Janie Vanover/teacher here in C/wood)..for appetizers (or just to snack on - ham biscuits and chicken salad croissants)...pumpkin pie/topping and my HOMEMADE Molasses Stack Cake...how does that sound??? Bet you are making something tasty....what???? Oh, I need some sort of sald and my choice would be broccoli/cauliflower and the girls nixed that one right off the bat, any suggestions - maybe Waldorf salad??
It took alot more time finding the graphics that it did to incorporate them into the board. But, I wanted something "homey".
I have my list.....went to Wal-mart last night. Needless to say, I had a half truck load of groceries!
We're having, turkey & gravy, ham, sausage balls, green beans, mashed potatoes, sweet potato balls, Mexicorn that I canned, corn on cob, stuffing, cole slaw, deviled eggs, baked potato cubes with onion soup mix, corn bread salad, sour dough rolls (that I bought...I forgot to get my started started in time to make my own), and cranberry sauce (no salad this year, Mother can't have anything red right now).
For dessert, I'm making banana pudding, peanut butter pie, rum cake, German chocolate cake with caramel sauce, pecan pie, and pumpkin pie. I am making homemade marshmallows and will have graham crackers w/ apple butter (quickie stack cake LOL), and peanut butter fudge...plus what ever else I think of at the last minute.
My family has a variety of favorites. I try to please them all. My parents, grandmother, 3 brothers, their wives and kids will be here, along with my son. I try to make enough so everyone will have leftovers to take home.
I've already started cooking. I think I have it down pat! I'll be dead Friday though! LOL

We're having turkey plus a deep fried turkey breast sweet potato casserole, broccoli cass, mashed potato, candied sweet potatoes, stuffing gravy cole slaw, macroni salad, corn home grown fall beans, corn bread store bought rolls, lol, pumpkin pie, pecan pie, pumpkin roll, chocolate pie, pineapple upside down cake, and Granny's old fashion punch, etc. I can't wait I love Thanksgiving thats my best holiday.
