It turns out that my friend was not actually arrested. They detained him, and took him, in handcuffs, to the hospital also. They later took him back to his apartment. His mom is also back from the hospital.

I shouldn't go into details about the incident itself, other than that the impression (from the viewpoint of the police, as well as outside observers) of what might have happened is probably much worse that what I have been told actually happened.
