Although we're closer to Britain mostly (I.E. Americans are the ones with the language screwed up :P)
Cold, crunchy things that come in a sealed bag-
America: Chips
Australia: Chips (but Crisps is acceptable)
Britain: Crisps
The "hot" kind you get at McDonald's-
America: [French] Fries
Australia: [Hot] Chips (Fries is sometimes used)
Britain: Chips
So as you can see, either an American or a Brit in Australia will be fully understood in this regard.
