WinXP SP2 breaks Starship Titanic

SST was running reasonably happily in WinXP (all I had to do was rightclick on the icon, select properties, and set it to Win95 Compatability)...

... until I installed the SP2 upgrade. After doing so, certain areas of the screen (those presented as video clips, I suspect) appear only as black areas. Examples are the introduction's TV screen and crash, the Suc-U-Bus, and transitions through doorways.

Also: Upon exiting, I now get a SmartHeap Library popup window saying MEM_BAD_POINTER. Doesn't tell me which pointer, of course.

I've tried MS's DX9 installer. It seems to return immediately, suggesting that either I'm already up to date or it isn't designed for XP.

If there's anything I can do to help you diagnose it, let me know.

(The SST package I bought explicitly says WinXP is supported, so I hope someone is actually supporting this...)

SP2

Just after SP2 was released somebody else had the same problem and fixed it by uninstalling SP2.

Microsoft has admitted that there are a number of programs which no longer work if SP2 is installed and sadly, it would appear that SST is one of them.

The real irony is that it's been reported that some Microsoft programs cease working! grrr!

You can get rid of those error messages by disabling support for Asian languages. This doesn't really cure anything but those error messages will go away:-)

Providing you have Restore Points enabled, you should have one dated the time you upgraded.
Find it by right-clicking My Computer, select Properties, then System Restore.

You could try using 'search'

In my list of add/remove programs is is called Windows XP Service Pack 2.

That is Start/Search/For Files and Folders.

Absolutely Nothing, I tried saerching my whole computer for 'Service Pack 2' 'SP2' and 'Windows XP service pack 2' but the only thing i found even remotely related to SP2 was a file called SP2.cab, inside which was nothing regarding uninstallation...

Ok... Uninstalling SP2 is impossible because by OS was BUILT on WinXp/SP2, so unless I completely reinstall my OS to SP1 I'm hopeless...

Just a thought, but how about getting hold of something like BootMagic and a copy of Windows 98SE and make a little Win98 partition?

... as I said, just a thought.
