Britain's Astronomer Royal, Dr Richard van der Riet Wooley, declared not only did he not believe humans would ever travel in space but that "Space travel is utter bilge".

In light of the SST problems, maybe he was right.

btw .. I'm back

January 3 2005, 2:56 PM

.. in the Shire .. after an exhaustive UK tour

Glad to see the ship is still ship shape and Bristol fashion.

I heard an explanation for the phrase last night on Antiques Roadshow:
Bristol, having the second largest tidal differential in the world or 40 feet means that most craft at low tide rest on their keels and roll a bit. Hence anything not wanted to break needs very careful stowage .. and so was born the phrase "ship shape and Bristol fashion"

There .. that's my tidbit of info for 05 ... except Great Niece number six is doing very nicely thankyou

Not sure about the Reit Wooleys - sounds like a New Zealand family to me.

Antiques Roadshow

January 11 2005, 10:21 PM

Hello - I used to be on the SST forums a few years ago, (different name - the one I used before seems to have been taken here...) but lost touch and have just come across it all again.

I saw the bit about ship shape and Bristol fashion on the Antiques Roadshow as well - you live and learn.
