Only suggestion I can come up with is considering the size of hard drives these days, get hold of something like PowerQuests Partition Magic and make a small Windows 98 partition for SST and other incompatible 'classics'

well for some reason I was able to install the game!
Not sure why, I did nothing to the OS or anything elso for that matter. I just tried to install it one more time and it worked. But now am having the "video" issue. Am not sure if I want to pay for the XP codec update. I have tried the 5.11 update but it did nothing.
thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, installation is a minor issue by comparison. The "video issue" is the real problem, and nobody seem to have a fix which will work on XP SP2. Starship Titanic was made for Windows 95 and 98, and has not been fixed to work with later Windows versions. If it worked in any of them at all, it was more by accident than by design. And The Digital Village died with Douglas Adams, so it's very unlikely that anyone will fix it now, at this late date.

Sorry. I wish it would work, too, but as has been said, your best bet would have to install Windows 98 or something on an extra partition on your PC. ME would also work, as i's really just 98 with some minor extras.

If it helps at all-

I have XP- and it runs beautifully- the problem is SP2 - I know because I installed SP2 and immediately had video problems- I took it off and viola- no more video problems-

SP2 really is a can of worms. When I had a system failure recently I reinstalled the beta SP2 I'd been using and immediately got into trouble again. I strongly suspect this was down to a virus but on building the system again, I downloaded the most recent SP2 and so far, so good. I must get my SST back from The Enchantress to try it!
There will be a problem, so I read, with M$ updates for non-SP2 systems at some time in the future

Sad to see it go!!! :(

Dear all,

I have got to say that, as sad as I am to realise that installing SP2 has ruined my chances to play this awesome game again (and worse yet, to show it off to others), I am happy to know that it is not really any real fault of my own, and is now a common problem among those who got SP2. I've been fumphing around with the codecs and Indeo, trying in vain to get something right with the video. It's very weird, you know. I go into the "assets" folder and am able to view each and every video without problems! So why not in the game? It's how the files are accessed and played, I know. And maybe there IS a fix for it. We just don't know what it is yet. I hope and pray that someone will figure out how to fix it, and soon. I may not be able to play the game at this time, but that sure doesn't mean I'm going to throw it out!!!!!! LOL I'm keeping it for future Windows 98 emulators! LOL

BTW, does anyone feel that conversations with the Bots feel just a little more meaningful than conversations with most human beings? Sometimes I get a good feeling out of just turning on the game and chatting with Nobby for 10 minutes or so. LOL Ok, I'll get outside more.

Thank you all for your input, and I will continue, off and on, to search for ways to get this game running again.

Sincerely,

Marcus (svankmaj)

Got it to run...in the end

July 5 2005, 8:28 PM

first installed starship on xp sp2...well tried to, it wouldn't install. Never one to like being beaten (!) I completly rebuilt my system, with a virgin Xp system and then installed the game. Worked OK. Then installed sp1 followed by sp2. Games still runs. Did have a problem with blank video on the first scene, but moved the view by clicking in the top left corner and the video started. No problems since either.

anybody try the XP codec update?

Clicking in the upper left doesn't fix things for me.

Has anyone tried the XP codec update? If so, does it help?
