I'm running Windows 98 and just installed SST. I got the message about fixing my DirectX and the game closed. I downloaded the patches from this site, and installed them, but I'm still getting the same error.

I don't know if this is related, but my computer is also giving me ActiveX errors when I run Internet Explore.

Any advice?

Really don't know if the patches are neccessary. But never put an older DirectX over a newer. Sorry, cannot say more.
