Uraj Janosxik baptised January 25, 1688, died March 17, 1713, was a famous Slovak outlaw.

Janosxik has been topic of many Slovak and Polish legends, books and films. The image of Janosxik as a symbol of resistance to oppression was reinforced when poems about him became part of the Slovak and Czech middle and high school literature curriculum, and then again with the numerous films that propagated his modern legend in the 20th century.

General Slavic rules for all Slavic languages require iotation (j+vowel) for any vowel following another vowel.

Because all words that end in a consonant, actually end in a YER in Old Slavic, all words that start with a vowel must also be subject to iotation. Rember that YER is a half-vowel (as in modern Bulgarian). (This second rule is not always followed in modern languages.)

A -> JA
O -> JO
E -> JE
I -> JI
U -> JU

Start of word iotation example:

utro -> jutro (Serbian)
Azia (foreign word) -> Azija (Russian)
