ITALIAN SIGHTINGS FOR JULY
The data collected by the telematic working group for the
Italian case histories, on the monthly update of reports of
UFO sightings in Italy, has been released.
This past July, the group gathered 51 observations of UFO
phenomena, pushing the ongoing total for the first seven
months of the year 2003 up above 300.
Contrary to norm, the majority of the sightings were not
concentrated in northern regions (which contributed only
a third), but rather to the south and mainly throughout the
islands.
Meanwhile, the prevalence for nocturnal lights remained
constant, of which approximately one-half were immediately
identifiable as the planet Mars, the international space station,
Iridium satellite flashes, and bolides.
Complete lists and statistical tables, featuring comparisons
with the previous three years, will be made available as always
on the Website of the CISU.

UFOS ON THE COVER PAGE OF "FOCUS" MAGAZINE
The September issue of the monthly journal "Focus", which
has been on newsstands already for a few days now, again
features a cover page referencing an article about UFOs inside.
Aside from the (by now) routine answers from the Italian Center
for UFO Studies to reports from readers who have witnessed
unusual aerial phenomena, Paolo Toselli has in fact penned a
story in this issue about the celebrated sighting by thousands
of people which reportedly took place over Florence on 27 October
1954, along with the "shower" of whitish filaments (i.e. "angel hair")
that covered various areas of the city.
Along with a recap of the news events of the period, the article
also reports for the first time part of the content of two sources
that were recently uncovered by the CISU: 1) a long letter by
Professor Canneri (who analyzed the filaments) to the ufologist
Renato Vesco, which contained unpublished details on his
analysis; and 2) some newsreels from the cinema news weekly
"Settimana Incom", in which are shown some of the filaments
as well as a "hoaxed flying saucer" put up by the same newsreel
camera operator, by launching a toy balloon.

NATIONAL CONFERENCE IN VITERBO
The countdown continues to the 18th National Conference of Ufology,
organized as in every year by the Italian Center for UFO Studies.
As previously announced, this year's conference will be held in
Viterbo over the weekend of 27-28 September, in a venue largely
open to the public and as part of the events making up "Viterbo's
September". The theme for this year is: "Things Seen in the Sky -
the Study of UFO Phenomena."
CISU members should already have received their notification of
the conference and of the annual members meeting that will take
place over two consecutive days.
