ITALIAN UFO NEWSFLASH

ISSUE NO. 405 - 19 SEPTEMBER 2003

by the Italian Center for UFO Studies
(Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici, CISU)

- Italian Sightings In August
- National Conference In Viterbo

ITALIAN SIGHTINGS IN AUGUST

As with every month, data has been released for the updates
on UFO sightings reports in Italy that have been gathered by
CISU telematic working group on the case histories, coordinated
by Giorgio Abraini.

The number of reports of observations and phenomena occurring
in August totaled 66, pushing the total for 2003 over 400: a
noteworthy figure, albeit falling considerably below the corresponding
total for data collected in the same period during the preceding two years.

Over one-half of the observations came from Northern Italy,
with Piedmont and Lombardy alone representing one-third;
a fourth were contributions from the South, and one-fifth originated
in Central Italy.

August, as was the case during July, was influenced by conventional
celestial phenomena of various kinds: the planet Mars, ISS, a meteor,
and iridium flares accounted for 21% of the month's sightings, even
if - contrary to expectations- Mars seemed not to have generated a
large number of reports (i.e., only 3 cases in August and 11 in July).

The major event of interest for the month took place in Pinzolo (Trento)
on the 23rd, involving 2 very luminous discs joined by an oblique line.
Another interesting case came to light which had a pilot in flight as its
witness.

Only an additional 3 crop-circle formations joined the list (bringing the
total for the "Italian Wave of 2003" to 44).

Based on the collection of reports (and on their increase, over time),
an attempt was begun to identify and anticipate, from a statistics
standpoint, the evolution of "waves" of sightings.

NATIONAL CONFERENCE IN VITERBO

Set to kick off at press time is the 18th National Congress
of Ufology, organized by the Italian Center for UFO Studies in
Viterbo at the prestigious Grand'Hotel Salus, featuring
sponsorship by the Community, Province and Region.

The conference, of which the portion open to the public will occur
starting at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, 27 September, will have as its
theme: "Things Seen in the Sky - the Study of UFO Phenomena."

Topics scheduled to be presented include the following: the
photographic caselog; the mystery of the "disappearance" of
sightings of the classic kind; the uncensored, behind-the-scenes
goings-on of the UFO commission initiated by the Italian Military
Air Force; the ufological history timeline; and the local caselog.

Further detailed information on the program, hours, and itineraries
are available at the Website of the CISU and in the section on
Viterbo, www.ufotuscia.it
