I recently bought a model 54 after reading in my cabelas catlog that it was a gas ram gun. Now I got rid of the catalog and I everywhere else that I look says that it is a standard spring piston gun. Anyone know for sure? One of the reasons that I bought it was for the gas ram so I could keep it cocked indefinately.

The Model 54

is a semi-recoilless spring piston gun. It is very accurate and powerful. There really is no problem with leaving modern spring guns cocked for 1/2 to one hour or so. It won't hurt them. Personally, I don't walk around with a loaded or cocked gun but that's just me I guess. It's a safety habit I acquired when varmint hunting ( groundhogs & crows ) with high power single shot centrefires. The cartridge was never inserted until I spotted the animal and knew I had a shot. Just got used to doing it that way and couldn't change now if I wanted to.

The only hunting I have done so far has been rabbit hunting with a dog. If I wait until I see the rabbit to cock the rifle the rabbit will be out of sight by time I'm done. Squirrel hunting will be a little different but I haven't found a good place to go for that yet.

Cock it and hunt with it

That's what it is made for. Don't worry about the spring. If you shoot it a lot eventually the spring will need replacing like tiress on a car. You don't keep a car in thye garage to save the tires do you?

enjoy the gun

Wait...

...do you have the gun in hand yet? It comes from the factory with a spring. Does your's still have a spring or has it been swapped for a gas ram? I am confused by your question.

Don't fret the spring. No problems with my 54 spring yet after many years and MANY 1000s of shots with .22 cal CPs. I sent it to Russ B for a trigger repair.

And the 54 is anything but "standard". It is a top of the line spring gun with the hunter in mind. Heavy? You betcha. Powerful? Accurate? Surprising? Fun? Hell YEA!

When I first noticed this gun in the cabelas catalog the caption next to it said that it was a gas ram gun. From what I have been told now that is not the case. However... I have decided not to worry about that. It has more than enough oomph to it. and the anti recoil has helped me be a decent(though not yet good) shot. If the spring eventually wears from having it cocked to long while hunting then I will replace it. Everything about this gun is first rate even if I was confused at first.
