I heard from one airgun shop that they don't like the RWS54's due to the changing POI caused by the action sliding around on the rails...have any of you read/heard or experienced this?

Or do you think this is an isolated situation?

Never

heard that one before. There is no slop in the rails. It's like a return to battery system. We call them "rail guns" in centrefire benchrest. No problems with the design there either.

Almost Non-Existant Problem

I wouldn't sweat it at all. There are far more problems because the stock screws aren't tight.

Never go to that shop again.

They either had a broken gun, a broken scope or bad mounts. In either case they obviously don't know their business.

A worse case is that they were simply lying to you so that you would purchase something else, or simply jerking you around.

I would find a different shop ASAP.

You have a lot of questions about the 54. Have you purchased one yet, or still gathering data. Have no fear. The 54 is awesome, heavy but awesome. My .22 version is a joy to shoot. Russ B still has it to repair a faulty aftermarket trigger sear, and maybe tune it. Rest assured that out of the box the 54 will do more to impress you than you can imagine.

Yes, I bought a new 54(.177) :-)

I bought it from Cabela's and had it direct shipped to Russ Best for a custom tune, adding a modified trigger blade with 1st and 2nd stage adjustment screws, should be here in a couple weeks , yeah, it was another airgun shop that raised the issue, but I'm not sweating it...looking forward to it getting to me then I'll decide on a 350(.22) or 54(.22) and send it to Ed a.k.a. Ekmeister for a tune...

Doh! You better not get your ...

...54 back before I get mine! My 54 and 350 were sent to Russ in mid-October of 2004. If I remember your yellow forum post correctly you had your 54 shipped to him in December. Between his fuel oil spill, broken grinder and job hunting I am surprised he has time for any tuning at all.

My 54 came with a Vortec sear already installed. It went from silky smooth to dangerous after a few years. Let me tell you...when that piston comes forward with an open breech it is NO JOKE. Even with the anti-bear trap safety it makes you nervous. Then it started firing when I clicked off the safety. I packed it up in a heartbeat and sent it off.

The 350 snapped the factory spring. Figured a tune was in order since it was out of warranty.

Good luck. Hang in there and don't buy anything else until you shoot the spring out of your 54.
