What the man at Speer told me

March 9 2005, 12:29 PM

I was asking about rifle bullets and moly coating. He said they compared moly coating to scatter rugs. Took me a while to get it. What he meant was that the moly treatment supposedly laid down the bore by successive bullets may actually be uneven, causing drag to shift from side to side as the slick and slow spots were encountered by the bullet. Maybe the same thing with air rifle pellets. One thing's for sure. The US Post Office has been right on this 99.9% of the time: "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is".

You could try it in an inexpensive gun and make comparisons. Who knows? It may work. Saw some of the coated Beemans yesterday for the first time. Looked like moly to me.

I've started using...

Militec-1 as a pellet lube and it does reduce group size and keeps the bore clean.
I believe any pellet should be lubed for a high power airgun, say 800fps & higher as most are lubed from the factory for standard velocity airguns and its just a light thin film usually with a little graphite.
But the biggest problem I see is unwashed pellets have a lot of little chips of lead from the process of mfg. which can cling inside the pellet skirt throwing it off balance and perhaps causing a flyer.
Before I lube I'll put a batch in a glass jar, pour in some acetone gently shake then pour this out into another container for reuse using a coffee filter for straining, this is where you really see the crap! The acetone drys quickly, no need to wait overnight as when washed in soap & water, I let them finish drying on a doubled paper towel for ten or so minutes then put the pellets into a plastic sandwhich bag, a few drops of the Militec-1, shake gently getting it evenly distributed and back into a cleaned tin, happy pellets, happy air rifle, and happy shooter.

re: Militec-1

I've been using Militec-1 with my .22 Hi-Standard for about three years now. This stuff beats any other firearms lube I've ever tried, but I'm not really too sure how well it would work on airguns, since they probably never reach the kind of operating temperatures needed for it to "bond" with the metal. I don't think it would hurt an airgun, at all...just not sure it would actually help.

I've also used Militec-1 as an engine treatment. Very slight increase in gas milage, not as dramatic an increase as the publicity would have had me believe. Perhaps it will pay off in the long run, in terms of engine longevity..?
