I own a mod. 34 since one year now. I was looking for something more powerfull and my uncle said he had a mod. 54 that he never used so he gave me the gun. The gun is from 1994 . He never fired the gun in 5 years. I fired one shot, puled the lever back, loaded the pellet into the breech. Wanted to release the cocking safety but the gun was jammed. Could anyone tell me the cause of this problem?

First question...

Did you pull the lever ALL the way back? Did you see the action slide forward?

If no, pull the lever back a few more inches.

If yes, decock the gun thusly:

Sit down.
Place the butt in your lap.
Place your right hand on the end of the lever.
Place your left hand under the foreend with your thumb on the release button.
Pull the lever back 1/2 inch while pressing on the release.
When the release button goes down, KEEP IT DOWN and EASE the lever forward.

Send the rifle away for inspection and repair.

De-cocking RWS 54

April 1 2005, 2:00 PM

As a newbie, I appreciate the information on de-cocking. I have not had the problem, but in my search of information on air guns, I have not seen the de-cocking procedure mentioned. Thank you.

Jim,

That proc was for decocking a 54 that had not been fully cocked. For a fully-cocked 54 you have to:

Sit down.
Place the butt in your lap.
Pull the lever to it full rearward position.
Place your right hand on the end of the lever.
Place your left hand around the grip.
With your right had pulling backward just a hair on the lever, flip the safety off with your left thumb and pull the trigger.
Ease the lever forward until the antibeartrap safety catches the piston. KEEP YOUR HAND ON THE LEVER.
Slide your left hand to the foreend.
Pull slightly back on the lever and depress the antibeartrap button with your left thumb.
Ease the lever forward until no pressure is on the spring.

Its easier to understand when seen than in print.
