I have been told by an experienced airgunner that by cutting and slightly shortening the mainspring of my diana 48B it would eliminate or minimize its recoil while at the same time power would not be reduced or if their is a reduction it would be insignificant and unnoticeable. Is this assumption valid?

cut springs

April 5 2005, 6:52 AM

I asked the service tech at rws about a diffrent spring for my 48 back in 1994. He told me if i would trim off 3-4 coils it would smooth it out and still be a good shooter. I did trim it off and liked it so well i trimmed my 36 spring also. both of these guns have had thousands of pellets shot thru them with no problems from the springs. The way i trimmed them was to cut off 2 coils with a rotary cutter wheel then i worked the end down flat for 1.5 coils with a pair of vise grips with as little heat as possible from a propane torch. then i flattened the end square with a sanding wheel. after this was done i had to retemper the end by heating it to a brown/blue color and quenching it in oil. slow and easy and try to keep the heat zone as short as possible. I have no way to measure the speed of these guns but they are still plenty strong and much smoother shooting.
