What scopes will provide long-term service with the RWS Model 350 in .177 cal? I've heard this rifle is especially hard on scopes.

I don't want to pay the high $$$ for the Bushnell 4200 scope. I'm especially interested in knowing if the Simmons 44Mag scopes are hardy enough. I've got my eye currently on the 6.5-20x44 model.

TIA/ Jim

Small and sturdy scopes

September 7 2005, 2:32 PM

The main mistake in thes guns is to try to put in them a large scope.

Try the small and sturdy Diana's (4X32), BSA's (4X32) or Leapers (3-12X40).

Get a good mount drooped to correct alignment by Tim MacMurray.

Scope on 350

September 7 2005, 4:18 PM

Hello Hector,

I think it's normal that a small scope is more solid as it gets less leverage and torsion under recoil and makes for a more rigid, compact, unit.
I am happy to hear that the Diana 4x32 does well on your 350, even without the Dampa mount as I would very much like to get me a 350 (.22). I have read that the .22 versions shoot gentlier, is this true ?

Also - even if this is a Diana forum - would you pick a 350 or a Weihrauch 80 (Beeman R1)?

I really want a powerful springer that does 20fpe or 27 joule. This because RWS R25 .22short ammo does 27 joule in an Olympic rapid fire target pistol like a Walther OSP. (it's a psychological thing for me)

BTW: my diana 34 (.22) does 15fpe and my HW97K (.177) 14fpe
Both with standard springs and no modifications whatsoever.

Un abrazo tambien,

Joris

Hello Joris!

September 9 2005, 2:55 PM

Probably it feels that the 0.22" gun is gentler, in reality it isn't. Recoil energies are poportional to ME's, if a gun outputs more ME, it also outputs more Recoil energy. Humans are bad "measurement machines" if anything takes longer, we feel it smoother.

I have nothing against HW guns, but if I were to deviate from Diana, I would go for a GasRam gun, whatever the maker. If I remember correctly it's the RX2 the one that is GasRammed. Apart from that nothing will make me deviate from Diana.

I understand the psychological end of the power equation, and a 350 is deffinitely powerful, but rather than scope it, I would advise you to start shooting with a peep sight. This reduces the possible problems and allows you to concentrate on shooting well, not on problem solving.

Your guns perform admirably well, we are not so blessed here at almost 9,000 ft above sea level.

Shoot with iron sights

September 9 2005, 4:03 PM

Hello Hector again,

This may well be the wisest advise to give on scoping magnum springers (or gasrams): simply: do not scope them ! "This reduces the possible problems and allows you to concentrate on shooting well, not on problem solving." TRUE

If one takes into account how many scopes have already been killed by such guns, one should rightfully come to the conclusion not to put a scope on them.

I remember from my youth, when I shot peep sighted guns rather often (heavy target guns like the Feinwerkbau 300S and the Walther) that it is quite possible to shoot very accurately with them. "En plus" there are insert lenses available to them with 2x magnification (forbidden on matches though). It only takes longer to "find" your target since the field of view is very narrow. I have a Walther-diopter available, but unfortunately they do not fit on the rails of a Diana.

Bear (polar) in mind though that best/match quality diopters - in combination with a fitting front sight) will set you back - well - as much as a Leupold 4x33 scope. But they are GOOD and they will survive almost any gun which makes them cheaper after a few broken scopes.

Hector, no offense, but I think recoil is not only in function of the ME. Also the mass of the bullet should be taken into account.
Take 2 Marlin lever guns of the same weight, one in .30-30, another in .45-70.
With factory loadings, the 405grains .45-70 round has less energy than the classic .30-30 with 170grains, yet recoils harder.
But I think that "mass of the bullet" is not an issue with airguns.

9000 ft ?! Hector, you are not supposed to shoot your guns when in an airplane !

Kind regards,

Joris

is not in an airplane.

We simply live up here.

There is an added advantage to peeps: low weight.

Even a Crosman 1377 peep sight (plastic) will survive many many scopes. And it only costs US$2.00, sure it is a pain to adjust, but once done, it's done. Over and out. Simple.

Since mass of the pellet is relatively low compared to the mass of the spring, piston and spacers, etc. I neglected it. Powder burners are totally different.

Shoot straight.
