I found something kinda strange. I zeroed in the rifle at 50 yards (cause thats what I like to shoot) using Crosman Premiers light (7.9 grains). I was getting 1.5 to 2 inch groupings most of the time with an occasional stray here and there. Good enough for a new rifle I think.
BUT
I tried switching over to Crosman Premiers Heavies (10.5 grains) and was expecting go get groupings a couple of incher lower doe to the added weight. Thats what Chaigun calculated would happen anyway. But nope.
I was getting shots almost 8 inches lower with the heavies. And the goupings werent anywhere near as good either. I doesnt make any sense to me. Anyone know what could be going on here ? Is this normal? Am I expecting too much ?
Helder
I dont have one and didnt see anyone at the range today that had one either. Maybe next weekend. It would have to be some serious lack in power for a heavy to drop like that compared to a light. I hope thats not the problem. Actually I hope its NO problem at all. ARGH I need a chrony fast. Wont sleep well till next weekend now :-P
I couldnt resist and went and bought a crony and tried it out
1009 with the lights
847 with the heavies
That seems to match what straightshooters has on their take as well. any ideas as to what could be causing 9 inch more drop for heavies at 50 yards ? I phoned rws today and their weaponsmith said it should be about 2 to 3 and Chairgun agrees with him.
Believe in what you see and experience. Cheack reality, not imaginings. Numbers and programs are just to give you an idea.
Most factory 48/52/54 will not like heavy pellets because the piston is too light. If you want to shoot heavy pellets, you need a heavy piston, like the Vortek piston, OR add a top hat to the piston. But then you need a different spring.
Try JSB Exacts lights at different ranges and under different wind conditions and then decide if you really want to use heavy pellets.
You may be seeing recoil effects. Lets' say the lights are getting out of the barrel before any appreciable piston bounce occurs, but the heavies aren't getting out of the barrel until after the piston has started it's return ( and corresponding opposite recoil ).
It's smoke and mirrors, but the best this old fart can come up with.
Hi,
I have had my mod. 48 a little over two years now and it really liked the heavys, but the spring didn't.Got about 1500 rounds through it and the spring broke, then about 1000 rounds later again the spring went south again.I changed too Beeman Ram Jets. They group at 1/2 inch at 30 yards. The chorny numbers are very close to what I get with my rifle.I just got a tin of Beeman Field Target Specials that group well with my rifle.More testing is needed.
Hope this helps,
Gary
