CB Caps, Ah YES!
Even though we are primarilly an Air Gun Forum, discussions of our favorite (oftimes comparable too) Powder Burners are very intresting and welcomed!
Oh man, a Browning CB Cap Semi-Auto!
What a DREAM Gun!
CB Caps have been a passion of mine since I discovered them back in the 70's.
My favorite CB Cap rifle is this Remington Nylon 12 Prototype that I was lucky enough to find in a Hock Shop.Cost me a whole $70 and has been more fun than watching a barrel of retarded Monkeys try to open a Snickers Bar! It's capable of quite good accuracy, and will smoothlly cycle both the CB Long and Short (It's favorites).
The Action is an earlier Remington bolt system (rooted way back to a design from the late 1930's-40's) mated to the Nylon stock. Remington engineers took the wonderfull stock components and developed a reliable and attractive trio of Bolt guns, sold for a short term back in the 60's. The trigger is not as crispand clean as the 580 series, and I suppose that this fact combined with the old perception of plastic being for BB-Guns, killed these sweet little rifles before their time. (Gladlly, the wonderfull Nylon-66 did not fall to the same fate!!!)
Besides being lightweightand nearlly indestructable, this particular Nylon-12 has a plesantlly accurate "Carbine Length" bbl. I checked the Proof Marks with the Factory and found that this rifle was a prototype for a sub-model of the Nylon Bolt action line. How it found it's way to that shop, is anyones guess? I tortured myself over using the rifle for years, and finally decided that since it was evidentlly used for testing as a "shooter", that it too was destined for loving and actual "Field Use", by a shooter such as myself so I gave it a fond life... It will go to my Children as a Family Heirloom, along with it's documentation.
Likely most correct, the rifle helped me clear out a huge Walnut Orchard of hundreds of Ground Squirrels. I convinced the Land Owner that I could Shoot-out the pests instead of his Broadcast spreading of poisoned grain (thankfully saving all the other animals of the Food Chain, a truely fitting Legacy to it!). The little rifle and various brands and case sizes of CB Caps, preformed the necessary task perfectlly!
I too use a vintage Ithaca Model 49 Saddlegun (Single shot, falling block Martini action, styled like a old Western Lever-gun), a diminutive "pet" Nickled, 1906 H&R revolver, (commonlly refered to during the SF Barbary Coast days, as a "Whores Pistol"), and a Davis .22 O/U derringer for enjoyable CB shooting.
*BTW, CB caps are NOT toys! My 6" Ruger Single-6, will easilly blast even a CB Short completelly thru my backstop material of 3/4" Cedar Fence boards at 30 yards! They are REAL bullets, and should always be treated as Dangerous and potentially DEADLLY!!!
Sorry for the krummy picture folks (I messed it up downsizing it...).
An enjoyable topic, and I thank you guys for your inputs about it!
Back to my R&R now,
ZVP
