I've been interested in air rifles for quite sometime and am now just about ready to take the plunge. I've pretty much settled on an RWS Model 48 in .177. Intended use will be paper punching and a bit of small game, ie. tree rats and the odd feathered pest.
Is there anything I should be aware of before I commit to the purchase? Any mods that will be benifit this rifle in the future?
Thanks all for a great web site and a chance to pester those with more knowledge than I.
You will always benefit by tuning the rifle or better yet, having it tuned. There are several good tuners out there.
The gun won't necessarily shoot more accurately with a tune, it will just be smoother, quieter and more pleasant to shoot.
I've never had a side cocker myself, rather, I prefer the simplicity of a break barrel. Howver, many tout it's advantages of having a fixed barrel. To be quite frank, I have a model 45 and a 46 that hits anything I've ever wanted to hit so break barrels are quite accurate. You might find them a bit easier to work on should you wish to get into tuning.
The Diana 48 is a very hard shooting air rifle. It has lots of speed, trigger is okay but not outstanding.
This is a gun that will benefit a great deal from a good tune. I could suggest some tuners. Aa good tune will reduce or eliminate spring twang and make it eaasier to shoot accurately. Are you looking for a plinker or hunting gun? Other guns to consider are Beeman R8, R10, FWB 124 or if youre looking for a gun that doesnt kick so much and you can live with lower power and added accuracy (550-600 fps) consider the Weihrauch 55MM. I love mine.
Drop me a note and well discuss what you will use the gun for. I have 30 different Dianas.,
