M-48 worn out

I have a model 48 in 22 cal that is 2 yrs old, lately I've noticed a decline in it's performance. Aluminum cans full of water used to burst, now it just pops a hole through the cans. The 50 yd shot is impossible unless I use a ridiculous amount of holdover. Anyway I tested it with a chronograph and the velocity was in the 370-385 range!!!!
I realize I could send it to a airgunsmith for new springs and a tune-up but should'nt I expect more life in the stock condition? I followed the RWS instructions and used the recommended lube sparingly at around 2500 rds.the gun probably doesn't have more than 4000n rds through it. Would this be a warranty job? Does anyone think another lube job would help. From what I've read they really don't need it, but with velocities below 400 fps it could'nt be worst.
I have a model 36 177cal that I've had for 10 years and got it second hand from a buddy that is still running strong.
Any advise would be appreciated.
Bill

A lube job wont do it im afraid ... Either the spring is broken, or lost most of its power ...
A new spring and piston seal and all should be well again i guess

If you put that chamber lube into the compression tube.......

February 12 2006, 11:41 AM

.......you probably blew a spring with some VERY severe dieselling. That lube is predominatntly for leather sealed guns, which a two year old 48 definitley is not.

hmmm

I just purchased a 54. heavy but so far its more accurate than I am. love it.

The more I read about oil/maintenance the more I think I should just leave this thing alone?? I have had it 3 days and burnt through 500 pellets.

Oil at 2500 rounds or if it's not broke don't fix it?

definite warranty work

February 13 2006, 3:29 PM

If you bought it new it will have at least a five year warranty for internals and they are very good at pleasing customers. Don't have the number but it is RWS service in New Jersey.

Broken Spring?

March 5 2006, 12:24 PM

Your local dealer should give you a spring and install it no problem. If not they aren't much to buy. Mine broke after 6000 shots, threw a new one in and she is like new. Be sure you find someone who can take it apart safely, if not you'll be in a world of hurt and missery.

model 48 fixed

March 5 2006, 5:08 PM

I sent the model 48 and a P-5 (that also broke the night I boxed up the 48!)to RWS, they came back both fixed(no charge) in a little over a week, The invoice showed that the breech seal was replaced in the Mod 48.
Now it launches the Benjamin Diablos(14.3gr 22 cal) at 760fps, and Crow Mags at 600 fps.
Previously the Beeman rear aperature sight was set pretty far to the right of center for a good zero. After the repair when I remounted the sight It zeroed when centered.
Nailing EMPTY 12 ga shells at 25 yds is no problem.(I filed the front sight to allow for a more precise point of aim.)
The 77 yard frying pan target is also an easy shot.-Hey I'm using iron sights, gimme some slack scope shooters!

model 48 fixed

March 7 2006, 4:54 PM

If it is a newer gun. They will warranty the internals. It could be the spring guide may have broken. that will make the spring arch in the cocked position, thus losing power. The spring will be damaged as a result.Springers are not that hard to work on. I remove all my springs without a compressor.

I think it's fixed now.....

March 8 2006, 2:16 PM

Tackdriver ,do you think the velocity is not up to specs? I know the gun is "advertised" at 900fps but I thought 760 with the Diablo's was pretty good, I have not tried any light weight pellets to compare velocity. What are other model 48's in 22 cal shooting with 14.3 gr rounds?

average fps

March 8 2006, 7:46 PM

760 is not that bad. 860s with a 14.5 grain is pretty good. Its still a new gun. give the barrel time to break in more. It will speed up in time. The older ones shoot pretty much the same, but not over 900 with a 14.5gr. Ps. Hows that 5gmag shooting?

Re: average fps

My 48 with .22 Crossman Premiers, which I believe are about 14.5 grains, gets a little over 800 fps, achieving a little over 20 fpe.

The P-5 is shooting fine

March 10 2006, 6:05 AM

It's velocity with lasers averaged 583fps(Which you advised against shooting those lite loads)
Crosman Premiere HP-490fps
Beeman Gold HP- 540fps

Do you like or have those fiber optic hi viz sights?

I find the rear sight distracting while trying to obtain a clear front sight. I'm almost tempted to paint it flat black but they are fine for diminished light shooting.

I have a "range" off my back porch with varies targets-spinners, tin cans, paint buckets, frying pans, bootle tops, etc rangeing from 15 to 77 yds ,but my favorite shooting is taking the kids on a stroll to the creek(a looooooong walk.)
Do you use a sling system or holster on your P-5?
