Re: 50yd groups?

February 13 2006, 3:37 PM

I just picked up a RWS 54 and sited it in at 47 yards. So far the best groups are an inch or under, with Meisterkugeln rws 14.0 gr. pellets.

I purchased it form Cabalas as a package deal with a nice scope and heavy scope mounts.

The gun was a little on the $$$ side but I really like the kick dampener built in the gun. The power is very impressive.

I have taken out 2 pest pigeons at 50 yards. Both birds were expired before they hit the ground. Hope this helps.

.22 cal.

If the "...Meisterkugeln rws 14.0 gr. pellets..." are anything to go by, the rifle in question must be in .22" caliber.

That is impressive.

Do you mind sharing the info on the dollar amount you spent on all?

I am thinking of saving up my money for a 54. What brand of scope did you get. I understand that 54 will destroy most scope.

Thanks!

wadcutter diabolo (R10 light) at 50meters did well

March 15 2006, 1:01 PM

It is often said that the wadcutter diabolos are worthless at 50 meters (55yds) and it really makes sense as the BC is bad, aerodynamics are nonexistent, etc.

Great was my amazement when I tried the following pellets in my HW97 .177 (sorry, no Diana, will use a Diana next time ) (all around 14fpe)
R10 heavy 4.50mm
R10 light 4.50mm
H&N FTT 4.52mm

The R10 heavies were doing something like 2"" but both the R10 light and the H&N FTT managed around 1".
I had to shoot in a hurry (as my time was limited) so these groups might even be bettered if shot more careful.

I still do not understand how it was possible to get such small groups with the R10 light (7.7 grains)

Kind regards,

Joris

ALL Brands OK here!

March 16 2006, 8:07 AM

Joris,

Please, NO aplogies. We all like and own several different brands, Heck we even discuss Powder Burners!

I just used up my airgun buget for a brand new Beeman R-11 and Leapers Scope, also I own and dearly love my HW-55.  HW makes some very fine airguns, and their trigger design is undoubtablly one of the best ever!

I am still in the "new owner shakes" stage with the R-11, so I couldn't begin to offer to add info on it's L/R accuracy to this string.

I have found it very difficult to have days Wind-still enough to use the 50 and 75 yard range. My usual gauge is 30 yard grouping. Conditions supporting super long range shooting here in my part of Calif (Nearby to the Coast Range Mts.) usually happen at first light.Providing that one gets out and set up early enough, you might get about a 45 minute window of still dead calm...  Even gentle Cross Winds are brutal to a pell over the flight span of 50 yards! Shape, B/C, and weight vary with each rifle, and finding a good long range pellet often suprises ya! I have a .177 BSA Scorpion Pistol that WILL shoot 50 yards (Benched of course), and it's favored pellet is the H&N Match for the job! Imagine that?

 Intresting tring going on here!

Re: 50yd groups?

I have a 54 .22 cal with about 4000 rounds through it now and the groups are quite nice.Gun became more consistent with use after about 2500 rounds. I still find from time to time that the point of impact changes but the grouping does not and it seems to travel in a clockwwise direction. Perhaps the spring or the piston is rotating around and causing a different frequency of vibration in the rifle causing a poi change. Just a guess. Always sight in a few bfore your hunt, hot day, cold day, pressure etc may affect poi.

RWS hollow points, very good about 3/4" @ 50 yds odd flyer. THIRD BEST

H&N FT round nose, also called Beeman FTR same pellets Excellent, 1/2 " @ 50 yds hardly ever a flyer.BEST IN MY RIFLE

JSB exact good, round nose 3/4" @ 50 yds harly ever a flyer.NEXT BEST

BSA round nose not too bad 1- 1.5 " and some wild flyers from time to time.

RWS Hobby, terrible, 905 feet / sec too fast all over the place 3-4" @ 50 yds.

RWS pointed good at 50 yds sometimes 2" and not good at closer ranges? Not sure why perhaps stabilization issue at higher speeds.

RWS Meisterkugeln good 1.5" 50 yds some odd flyers.

Crossman flat nose bad, full of flyers hard to measure any kind of grouping.

Beeman Crow magnum so, so lots of wallop but grouping best at 30 yds about 1" good for hunting though.

Daisy / Winchester brand round nose, not too bad, about 1" @ 30 yds with odd flyer.

I have not yet tried the RWS Superdomes as they are impossible to find around here or even mail order.

good luck

Try basic Crosman Points!

March 16 2006, 10:45 PM

I shoot em in my .22 Stingray Carbine, and does it ever group using them! They're my first choice, General Purpose, .22 caliber Pell, my second is the Crosman Wadcutter. Like their Bretherin, (the .177 Crosman Point), the B/C works out pretty high, they stabilize well at most ranges and fire good from most barrels. Cost is super reasonable (Bulk packs of 175 and 500). The alloy is quite hard, and penetration is very deep!

While the manufacturing Q/C is not as stringent as the Premire grade, you rarelly find a "bad" .22 Crosman Point in the container. It's one to definatelly try!
