Re: HONEST velocity/energy thread : 48/52/54 and 350 M

I have a 54 .22cal and it is a heavy slug but it is the most unbelievable thing to shoot. Makes all your shooting more forgiving as the recoil is near ZERO. As far as velocities I get:
RWS hobbies 902 feet/ second not so accurate though.
Most other pellets a max of 815 and the heavier ones around 785 the slowest.
I find the tight fitting pellets are the most accurate in my gun. The H&N FT pellets sold by Beeman as FTR are the most accurate, 3/4" @ 50 yds. Next in line is the JSB Exact wich group about 1-3/4" @ 50 yds and are very consistent.
I have a mod.48 in .177 cal. I have some data with pellets that I have tried :
RWS Super Dome 8.3 grs.-LO-949,Hi-970,Av.-960,ES -20.7,SD- 7.74
Beeman Ram Jet 9.6 grs.-LO-923,Hi-943,Av-934,ES-20.37,SD-5.47
Crossman Pre.Heavy 10.5 grs-Lo-853,Hi-874,Av-864,ES-20.6,SD-6.48
These are all 10 shot strings and fairly accurate,I have also shot Beeman FTS but no data on them.Stopped using the Crossman Heavys after two broken springs. My rifle likes the Ram Jets and FTS pellets by Beeman the best.Hope this helps.Gary
My RWS48 in .22 shoots at 925fps using RWS Hobbies which are 11.9 grains. Haven't tried the other RWS Meisterkugeln pellets I have since the weather in the San Francisco Bay Area has seen almost non-stop rain.

was literally running out the door @ time of cronying and was having trouble w/crony, thing drives me nuts lots of errors, I will do some shots w/ 350 and 48 for you both in 177.
My Mod 48 in 22 cal is a couple years old, the breech seal was replaced by the factory a couple months ago, todays results were:Benjamin Sheridan Diablos, 14.3gr:average-756fps,RWS Super H-point 14.5gr: average-730fps, Crow magnums 18.2 gr: average- 582fps, Daisy flat nose (14gr?): average-774 fps.
I am located in Fremont. I attended one of their events last summer. It was a bit of a drive for me. I brought my RWS48 .22 caliber, Tech Force 41 in .177 and my old Crosman 760 to the event. My RWS was accurate to 50 yards, the Tech Force to 25 yards and the Crosman with BBs acted like a shotgun but with pellets was accurate to 20 yards. At least I was able to meet beammeupscotty.
It seems that efficiency goes down with heavier pellets, but it blasts with the 'lighter' pellets.
It seems consistent as to what i saw on the pyramid air blog.
Mainly that because of the 48/52/54 is a short stroke action with a stronger spring and therefore likes light pellets better, and that the 350 M is a long stroke with a softer spring, and therefore liks the medium weight pellets better ...
I hope this helps, I found it very interesting as i thought my 350 was more powerful, and I didnt think my 34 was that powerful. turns out the 48 wins by a nose. the 48 fits the hands and body better than the 350 but the 350 cocks and aims faster than 48.
(It's bloody hard to find out which of the two (350 and 48/52/54) is actually more potent...
So far it seems that www.straightshooter's results are a bit off ...
Both guns are just so damn nice to look at altough totally different looks, and since i can't afford to buy both, something has to give the decicive factor of which one to get ...
One day im convinced to get the 52, and the other day im convinced to get the 350 ...
Anyone have any experience with a 48/52/54 with the Maccari Monolith kit by the way?
RWS 52 in 5.5 kal with new Maccari Monolith kit after 50 shots chronied;field target trophy, webley match, rws superdome all of 14.6 grains att 250 to 254 m/s that relates to approx 30 joules.
After 50 shots chronied 970-985 fps with Beeman FTS (just shy of 24 fpe). Over the weekend and tonight put about another 100 rounds through it. Now chronies about 820 fps with CP's (14.3 grain) for 21fpe and 990+ fps with Beeman FTS's (11.18 grain) for just over 24fpe. I've also got an older RWS 350 .177 that shoots CPH's (10.5 grain) at 875fps for 17.9fpe. The 350 had two previous owners so figure it has a little bit of a tired spring plus being lower caliber it's going to be a little less efficient.
My model 48 in .20 cal (my favorite gun) shoots the Beeman Kodiak 13.8 gr pellet at a consistent 960 fps. The Crosman Premeir domed 14.3 gr pellet at around 940 fps.
My model 54 in .22 cal shoots the Crosman Premier Domed, also at 14.3 gr at 920 fps.
I have shot lighter pellets at higher velocities but none have been as accurate as those mentioned above. So I stick with them.
Hi, what did you do i.t.o upgrades to your mod 48 that it shoot at 28 ftlbs?
I dont have a Chronograph but according to Chairgun ballistics program my Mod 54 177 only shoots at about 16,5-17 ftlbs.I know the 5 mm and 5,5mm is more efficient but isnt that a bit low for a 54?I only shoot 10,5-6gr pellets, might the heavy pellets have tired out the spring(shot about 4000pellets,everything is stock from factory)

I have a RWS 52 (.22) with a monolith kit that has shot aound 200 rounds of pellets. It seems to shoot best with the 14.3 grain pellets. In both the Beeman FTS's and Crosman Premiers it shoots at 865 FPS. The Beeman Kodiaks are too heavy (685 FPS). Good Luck.!!
