Don't worry, the Model 40 is a decent rifle. They are essentially a factory upgrade of the Model 34. It's sety-up for scoping, the heavy steel Muzzle Weight appeals to some folks. Airgunning is a GREAT Hobby!
You didn't mention the type of mount you're using.
I too have a Model 40 (slightlly de-tuned) and really like it! It has a Maccari GSI mainspring and a generous amount of Maccari Heavy Tar inside giving somewhat slower than stock velocitys and adding to a smooth firing cycle. Mine also has the Muzzle Weight removed. My Weight kept loosening and marred the barrel BAD and it just made the sleek rifle too heavy! I spent considerable time adjusting the barrel tension, the trigger, and making sure the stock screws kept tight.
I used a BSA 3x12 AO Scope and a pair of meduim Accu-Shot rings (they have a scope stop pin). I also set a small steel screw into the small hole on the rear of the scope plate to act as a "secondary" scope stop. The BSA Airgun Scope is an excellent unit I have bought 3 to use on various guns!
You may want to get some JM Heavy Tar and simply spread it on the mainspring through the cocking slot. It will migrate during shooting and quench much of the harsh mainspring action! Check and locktite the stock screws and set your barrel hinge so that the barrel stops anywhere you place it (after cocking, safety ON).
Sorry, there is no search function here, but tediouslly looking back thru the pages, you will find that the Model 40 is mentioned.
Enjoy!
