With air rifles you don't have to clean them very often. Once every 500-1000 pellets or so. I know some folks that never clean their air rifle barrels and they have no problems with accuracy - usually beat me (I clean mine) at the field target matches too. I would definitely try to keep any solvents from contacting any rubber seals while I was cleaning too.
Using nylon brushes down the bore as opposed to the brass ones; their just easier on the barrel. I use hoppes .22 patches, and Hoppes cleaner. Just remember to leave the barrel at the end dry and clean.
I think the best cleaning tool is a boresnake.
They come in different calibers and the .177 is available with or without the brush. Get the one without the brush.
I also bought one for my .22 PCP and removed the brass brush by carefully separating the threads and pulling the brush out.
I put a couple drops of RWS Bore Cleaning solvent on the boresnake before pulling it through the barrel from the breech to the bore.
I KNOW THAT it's been said DO NOT USE A BRONZE OR BRASS BRUSH .
I have RWS 34's the barrels are STEEL ! ( Much Harder than the brush ) Plus the brush is being used with whatever you are using to clean and it acts as a lube for the brush as well as a cleaning agent .
I clean my bore when the shot pattern starts to open up and or I fire about 750 or so shots through it .
I use a .177 bore snake with the brass / bronze brush about 2 - 3 pull troughs.
Then I use a pull through with patches and Goo Gone or whatever your favorite cleaner is . I do this until the patch comes out clean . I fire off a load of ( 3 ) felt pellet cleaners and then look at them . I then run another patch and check it .
My Shot Patterns ALWAYS RETURN TO what they where when the gun was cleaned the last time .
When the gun was NEW I slugged the barrel with a pellet and measured it and looked at the rifling.
I have recently did the same thing and there is NO DIFFERENCE IN SIZE AND OR APEARANCE OF THE RIFLING . The same goes for just looking down the bore with a bore lite from breach end or muzzle end ,
This method really cleans out the barrel and I don't see how a brass / or bronze brush can hurt a STEEL ( Even Soft Steel Barrel )
Just my dimes worth ..maybe I'm all wet but IT WORKS SO FAR with about 3- 4 thousand shots in a RWS 34 in .177 and same for the .22
May you all have the BEST OF THE HOLIDAYS AND BE SAFE
Have Fun ...Shoot Safe
