Scope mass and its effect on recoil

April 22 2007, 10:51 AM

Hi Jake.
Ill separate my answer into 2:

1. Generally, yes, a more massive scope shall reduce the recoil acceleration rate, thus introduce less damage to itself, But... :

2. For this to be practically helpfull, Im afraid the mass of the scope should be on a scale of the whole rifle mass...

The practical solution is munting a scope which is designed for air-rifle recoil. If it is of this kind, even a lightweight scope will remain undamaged.

The Diana-54 is a real scope killer since only the barrel+compression chambrer recoils, in contrast to a "classocal" springer where the whole rifle recoils.

By trhe way - a tough mounting ring set should be selected for the scope.

If you do any target shooting out to 50 yards a scope like this would really be nice . I have a similar leapers scope on my gamo 1250. They have side focus knobs which work very well. The cross hairs are etched in i think . They are very fine and precise. The mildot set up works great when shooting our far you can use the dots. illuminated red and green (choice)cross hairs are nice in low light . but wont show up in bright sun light so you can turn on and off as needed. Its a recoil rated scope that should live long on your rws. I have an RWS 48, 45 and also the Gamo hunter 1250.the Leapers will see time one each rifle. These scopes are on the heavy side but very well made and have lots of usable fetures for sure. I like mine alot and wouldnt recommend them if i didnt ..You can always dial down to 6x if you dont need the 16 power but I bet it will come in handy if you go for shooting at around 30- 50 yards. here is a link http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000PBY8FW/ref=nosim/?tag=nextag-sg-20&creative=380333&creativeASIN=B000PBY8FW&linkCode=asn Hope this helps you out .

scope weight

Jake, for any type of effect by recoil, the lighter the better and the less diameter of the objective/tube the better. THis means less inertia forces and less angle vectors (leverage effect) on scope internals by the (primary and secundary) recoil. Although a heavier scope makes for less initial recoil velocity, the acceleration force is greater and deceleration by the action reaching the endstop on the slide system has more effect on this scope, both because of the heavier scope's greater inertia. This apart from the forward (secundary) recoil effect of the piston reaching its end station or bounce point. This is a very complicated problem, in which one should also address the measurement of any vibrations that go in all directions and which also could destroy a scope.
It has been established that even the FWB 300 match rifle's recoil slide system can destroy scopes, these rifles having only 6 footpounds of energy.
Hope this helps !
Regards,

Hendrick
