Well my daughter and I strolled down to the local gun shop after having breakfast at our favorite donut shop at the bottom of the hill. Just wanted to have a looksy at the RWS850 and maybe get a few soft cases then the owner's son whom I've dealt with through the years says "Hey Tony, we got the 460's in finally in .22 and they are nice shooters, we have the .177's as well, wanna check it out?
I knew I shouldn't of said what I said next but I did..."Sure, is there a trap that I can test fire it into?" The response was "sure, meet me around back..." So I cocked, loaded, aimed, squeezed the trigger and "THWACK, KLANG!!!!" I was thinking, damn, that was a fast shot cycle, awful smooth for an RWS outta the box and man did it hit the trap with authority...then Mark tells me, if you're interested, I'll take $50.00 off and we can pull a couple boxes cause they have decent wood on them...that was it, I was trapped like a rat, no where to run, lol...my daughter is saying "are we gonna get it?!?! Yes...YEAHHHH!!!"
So first box comes out and the wood looked just fine to me, wasn't gonna go through their inventory, they had customers and I wasn't looking for a beauty queen this time round...
So after cleaning the barrel good and checking stock screws, grabbed some JSB Exacts(16g) and turned the chrono on...velocities ranged from 792 - 802 for 22.85 fpe!!! Grabbed a few more tins of pellets, set up my bag on the shooting table, quickly mounted a Leaper's 3 - 9 x 40AO IR Mildot scope(I'm really liking this scope for $60.00) on a Beeman 1 piece mount and started shooting....
Initial testing showed that it liked Premiers!

I like readily available pellets made in the U.S.!!!

At 25 yards, all pellets were touching and it also liked Kodiaks...
The 460 is a much slender feeling rifle compared to an RWS48/54 and the twang factor is similar to an out of the box R9 Goldfinger. Cocking effort isn't bad at all, a bit more than say my TX200HCs which are 12fpe but nothing like the next gun I'm going to report on which literally makes a Crow Magnum 3(.20) look anemic to cock, lol...anyways, back on topic, cocking feels a little gritty if you will so I'm gonna remove the action later and moly the cocking contact points and likely open up the action to moly and tar it. The shot cycle is incredibly fast and there isn't any torquing or jumping around which was a very pleasant suprise given its power level.
The T05 trigger is like every other T05 sporting trigger, a good, predictable sporting trigger. A quarter turn counter clockwise of the single trigger adjustment screw got the trigger where I liked it travel and let off wise. Going to swap out the trigger spring when I get it apart to make it a little lighter...
There is a bear trap mechanism which is basically similar to a 48/52/54 except it slides forward with the compression chamber as you depress it and return the cocking lever to its closed position.
I'm very impressed with it initially, hopefully it stays the same or improves as it wears in. Balance wise its better than a 54 in my opinion and fit and finish are typical RWS, good but not quite HW. Will report more as it develops, should make for a very nice hunter/plinker rig with LOTS of THUMP!!!
Regards,
Tony
