Steel ball in the teep

October 15 2007, 12:44 PM

Well, it is not trivial.
first, steel is less densed than Lead. This automatically puts a constrain that a larger volume is needed for the same mass, which means almost automatically larger cross section and larger dragg which puts a stipper drop of kinetic energy...
However, what you probably mean is that is can break hard targets. Well this may be true for thick glass bottles or hardened steel plates, but the overall result which may look impressive: an "explosion" of fragile matter, is done with less kinetic energy.
I guess you relate to hunting (which Im against, unless you are hungry). For this purpose hard tip is not very helpfull - a pest flesh is any way softer that the lead so a steel hardness is an "overkill"...

Certain ammunition like 9mm bullets for self defence have such types of tips, but there it is needed to penetrate armoured plates and anyway the bullet has several 100's of Jouls so the steel density is of less importance...
For Magnum airguns with 20 to 25 Joul top, it will be almost irrelevant for production.

Just another marketing gimmick from the Shamo gun company! Shamo company has lost all of their credibility with me.
