I have found a way to actually use the useless, and utter waste of natural resources that encompasses the telephone book or city directory. I received my new book today, and set it out at about 30 feet. I then shot my Diana model 34 in 177. cal into the book and then my 460 mag. in 22. cal. It was interesting to find that the velocity of the two guns to be about the same. Both pellets penetrated about the same. The 34 went through about 600 or so pages that left nice clean holes. The 22. mag did about the same but tearing the holes apart in a more drastic manner. The 177. cal pellet was a dome type pellet, I think a RWS dome. I cannot find the top of the can. The 22. cal were RWS domes and Meisterkugeln's. I also shot RWS in 22. cal Super H. Hollow points. I live in a condo, and went to the dumpster and pickup 2 more books today. I suspect I will find more tomorrow and plan to really see what both rifles can do with such a hard penetration. Earlier, I had read about velocities and penetration and saw the pics of the many different pellets. I will try to find the sight tonight and post it tomorrow. The author of the site pointed out, that penetration was really a matter of velocity. His pics were great and showed photo by photo of pellet's compressing under pressure and velocity.
I have been bragging about my 460. mag. on many post lately, but now I want to tell you that my little Model 34 is one hell of a gun. I shot about 500 pellets through it, and then just did regular maintenance on the rifle. Now it is so smooth and quiet and so damn accurate. I can really hit a dime target in the standing position at 25 yards without trying. The gun really surprises me. It is a great gun. I'am wondering now, how well it would perform in 22.cal? It is so much more lighter than the 460.mag. and with a heavy pellet, might just make a interesting hunting rifle.
