Mod 24 Tune?

I have a Model 24 T02 which I purchased new in 1995, for my son. He and I have put perhaps 1,000-1,500 pellets thru it, target shooting in the back yard. A couple of years ago, the Model 24 got the call to duty when our area experienced a tremendous population explosion of squirrels. They got into the attic and trashed it, built nests in the trees and harassed the dog (by being too fast for him to catch). We declared war, and have dispatched a number of them.

The point of my post is to ask if anyone has info on tuning and aftermarket springs, guides, etc. for a Model 24. I know they are available for the 34 and above, but I can't find any info or leads on parts or airgun tuners who are willing to work on the 24. I enjoy firing the 24, and actually prefer to plink with it over my Model 36 since it is quieter and less powerful, but was wondering if a good tune would help it's accuracy & smoothness, or is that too much to expect out of a 'ute' rifle?

Thanks very much for your opinions!

Bill

I've done one

it basically can take the HW R-7 spring or equal from Maccari, but you would probably want to make a new guide for it. JM's piston seal didn't fit mine, so I ended up getting one from RWS. When I did mine, it didn't lose any velocity, but was much smoother and sweeter to shoot. Later, I drilled a dimple in the head of the piston to get more air volume and picked up another 15 fps. I think your trigger is the non-adjustable one, if so, there isn't much that can be done with it. I would think that any tuner would be able to do it. But in this case, the tune is likely to cost about as much as the gun. Thats probably why you don't see guys advertising for it.

I'm sure Ed K or Paul Watts could tune it. If you are interested maybe give them a call.

Thanks for your input! I have no experience working on airguns, but thanks to the how-to's and pictorials on the net, I think I can handle doing a lube tune and spring myself. Could be an interesting winter project. Then when I get lousy results, I can call Ed, right? LOL. Was it the Apex small seal that didn't fit for you?

Gee, its been a while, and I've sold the gun, I don't remember which seal it was, or it may have been before he started making the apex seal.

Anyway, if you can find a take-down or tune page for the model 34, that would be a good resource for you. The 24 is pretty much just a smaller version of that gun.

Bill,
Have you checked out these links? The 13 part tune series is packed with info.

Thanks folks

I have found a good pictorial and description for taking down a RWS 34, so what I plan on doing is a spring install and lube tune on my Model 36 first, then the 24. Parts 'n stuff on the way from Maccari. Started building my spring compressor this weekend. This forum is a great resource!

Bill, you probably realize now that the 24 can take either

December 1 2007, 3:31 PM

JM's small apex (earlier guns) or large apex (34/36 seal, later guns). The cutoff was broken down a page back on this forum(TO question thread). Mine is a TO4-24C and it has the large tube of same diameter as 34's, just shorter. In the interest of manufacturing efficiency , Diana starting using the same large tube for many guns a few years ago. Jim can supply both seals.

Gotcha!

Thanks, mine is an older T02 requiring the smaller seal. Rec'd the JM stuff for both the 24 and 36, the mainspring for the 24 is dinky compared to the 36. I need to get some hardware for my spring compressor, then I'll do the 36 first.

Did the spring, seal swap and lube tune last week on both the 24 and the 36. Marked improvement on both! I'm very happy with the results. Both rifles are quieter and vibrate much less. I now need some decent weather so I can sight in the scopes. Santa's supposed to bring me a Chrony. I think I'm hooked bigtime, I'm salivating at the thought of a .25 52 Lux!!!

That's how it starts Bill

There's a great satisfaction in doing it yourself. Plus, you find out how these things really work and what it takes to make a sweet shooter out of a somewhat rough gun. Congrats. Remember to post those chrony results. Too bad you didn't take a baseline B-4 reading.

"but I'll be needin' that gun, fer squirrels and such."

Exactly right, Bill!

I thought about saving the project until after Christmas so I could get before 'n after chrony results, but just couldn't wait with those nice new parts staring me in the face! I will certainly post up my results, and thank you for your advice.

Merry Christmas everyone!
Bill
